Today we’d like to introduce you to King Ocie Turner.
Hi King ocie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I go by the stage name King Ocie aka K.O. coming out of Greensboro, NC . What is life like growing up in Nc well im a 90s baby 1991 to be exact. Life was vibrant! growing up didn’t have alot but had what I needed. My mom worked her butt of to make sure me and my brother was straight.
Shortly after my mom and pops divorced we moved back in with my grandmother. My Grandmother had alot to do with my upbringing because mom’s was a workaholic to say the least. We ended up moving from the Eastside of greensboro because the neighborhood we lived in was getting bad. After seeing someone get shot at 8 my mom didn’t want me around that.
Later on in my teenage years i found my way in the streets doing what most black boys was doing ‘typical yn’ activities you could say. A good kid just made horrible choices. I always loved music growing up aswell but hip hop/rap was a passion I had and still have till this day. It’s a driving force that shaped me into the person I am today. The name Ocie is my late grandfather’s actual name.
My pops wanted that to be my legal name but ma dukes wasn’t going for it. So she named me Christian. I later on wanted to honor my grandfather and that name Ocie has turned into what it is now King Ocie. Im inspired by countless artist such as j cole, jeezy, Jay z, outkast, bone thugs and harmony, and more. Music is life to me and my life is music.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nouthing about being a artist is smooth especially when you are serious and dont have the means to make things happen the way you want. Ups and downs and alot of wondering should you keep going is the day in day out for any artist trying to make a name for themselves. What separates you from the everyone else is will you give up on yourself or keep going.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love being creative i feel God gave me that ability so I have to utilize that. Im known for being able to just push through obstacles resilient is what sets me apart.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Just constantly putting yourself out there even when you feel no one is watching. You never know who is rooting for you.
