Daily Inspiration: Meet Katrina Castillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katrina Castillo.

Hi Katrina , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born and raised in the South Bay, I’m a local girl with deep roots in the community. As a single mom, creating a life that allowed me to be present for my son while pursuing my passions was always my top priority. Although I initially planned to attend dental school, the timing didn’t align with my responsibilities as a mother—my science credits had expired, and I wasn’t willing to sacrifice time with my son.

Instead, I chose a path that blended everything I love: science, skincare, and connecting with people. Becoming an aesthetician allowed me to build a flexible business that not only supported my family but also fulfilled my passion for skincare and chemistry. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit—I’m not one to work for someone else. I thrive in creating my own path and building genuine relationships with my clients.

Client care is at the heart of everything I do. I believe in personalized attention, ongoing education, and using my knowledge of skin and science to help people look and feel their best. Every client’s skin is unique, and I’m committed to offering care that reflects that.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a single mom while building a business was never easy. There were many rough patches—times when simply making ends meet felt like a major victory. My top priority was always providing a stable, loving home for my son, which meant carefully balancing his needs with the needs of my clients. I often scheduled appointments around his school day, doing everything I could to be present for him while still offering the best care possible.

For years, I dreamed of having my own studio, but financially, it was out of reach. I subleased a space for a long time—especially from Therese, a wonderful chiropractor and friend—while juggling rent, product costs, and business expenses. Despite the obstacles, I was incredibly fortunate to have the support of local business owners who believed in me and referred clients my way. The clients I attracted were kind, loyal, and genuinely wonderful people, which made my work feel less like work and more like a calling. Their encouragement and trust helped make my career feel smooth and, in many ways, seamless.

Vacations were local because that’s what we could afford—but I still wanted my son to experience the world. Since we couldn’t travel far, I brought the world to our home by hosting international study-abroad students. Over the years, our house became a space filled with different cultures, languages, and traditions. My son grew up surrounded by diversity, learning to connect with people from all walks of life. It was important to me that he understood the beauty in different backgrounds—and that everyone is welcome.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Skincare is both an art and a science—and I bring both into every session with my clients. I approach each face with creativity and precision, customizing every treatment based on skin type and goals. From shaping brows with custom-blended tints to lifting lashes and laminating brows that beautifully frame the face, I pay close attention to the smallest details that enhance natural beauty.

I specialize in facials that are personalized for brightening, tightening, lifting, calming, or clarifying—always using high-quality tools and modalities like microdermabrasion, microcurrent, ultrasonic therapy, and lymphatic drainage. Each treatment is thoughtfully designed to support healthy, glowing skin while creating a deeply relaxing, blissful experience.

I remove dead skin, extract impurities, exfoliate gently, and even remove facial hair to reveal a fresher, more radiant complexion. Whether I’m treating teen acne, sensitive skin, or signs of aging, every service I provide is tailored with love, intention, and a focus on long-term skin health.

My studio is an extension of my artistic vision—a calming, curated space where clients feel seen, cared for, and truly at home. I believe in building lasting relationships with my clients and helping them feel confident, beautiful, and nurtured—inside and out

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I absolutely love our community—the people here are warm, friendly, and deeply committed to their families and to the future of our children. Education is a high priority for so many families, and there’s a real sense of pride in creating a meaningful quality of life. That shared dedication creates a beautiful, supportive environment, and I feel lucky to be part of it.

I also deeply appreciate how our community respects and protects the land. There’s real care taken with native plants, the ecosystem, and local conservancy efforts. It’s inspiring to see how much pride people take in preserving the natural beauty around us.

Of course, like any place, it’s not perfect. Every now and then, there’s a bit of pretentiousness that doesn’t align with who I am—I value authenticity and kindness above all. I also have some concerns about infrastructure and how shifting land is affecting roads and home safety, and I hope to see more action from local government on those issues.

But overall, the good far outweighs the bad. I love where I live, and I’m proud to be part of a community that values connection, nature, and family as much as I do.
