Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaniya Toney “Niya Michelle”.

Kaniya (Niya) Toney (Michelle)

Hi Kaniya (Niya), we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
What’s up yall! I’m Kani’Ya, aka Niya Michelle, a 22-year-old Los Angeles native with a passion for all things music and entertainment! From rapping to singing, dancing to modeling, I’ve got a whole range of talents that I love to showcase.

My journey in music began at the tender age of ten, but it wasn’t until I hit high school that I truly started taking it seriously. Growing up with music always playing a significant role in my life, it was only natural for me to pursue a career in the industry. And with legends like my grandpa Andre (Dr. Dre) and my mom as my inspiration, I feel like I have some pretty big shoes to fill. But you know what? That just fuels my determination to reach the top.

For the most part, I’ve been honing my skills and making a name for myself in Las Vegas, performing and modeling. But now that I have a few gigs back home in LA, I’m beyond excited to reconnect with my people and expand my network.

Being a black female artist in the music industry can be tough, but I let my talent do the talking. Not only do I write my own music, but thanks to my engineer {Koru$} whose helped me create my sound; I’ve also ventured into producing and engineering. I want to be involved in every creative aspect of my career, which is why I’m currently studying audio engineering at the Los Angeles Film School. And soon enough, I’ll be diving into the world of the music business too.

When you listen to my music, I want you to hear something different. I’m not your typical female rapper who relies on selling her body or conforming to stereotypes. I’m authentic, I’m fierce, and I’m unapologetically myself. I bring a fresh perspective and a unique energy that sets me apart from the rest.

So, join me on this incredible journey as I continue to make waves in the music industry. Get ready to experience the magic of Niya Michelle because I’m here to stay!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a young black woman in the music industry is like being a warrior on a battlefield. It’s a constant struggle, but one that I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. I’ve faced my fair share of challenges, from men expecting personal favors in exchange for press or work to people judging my talent solely based on my gender without even giving my work a chance. And let’s not forget about the simple jealousy that arises from competition on songs.

But I refuse to let these obstacles bring me down. Instead, I choose to rise above them and use them as fuel to keep pushing forward. I’ve learned to laugh off the negativity and focus on the lessons that come from being a female in a male-dominated industry.

And when people do recognize my hard work, it’s like a burst of sunshine on a cloudy day. It’s truly rewarding to know that my talent and dedication are being seen and appreciated. Those who see beyond the stereotypes and biases always give me the recognition I deserve.

At the end of the day, I know my worth, and I won’t let anyone dim my light. Being a young black woman in the music industry may not be easy, but it’s a journey that I’m proud to be on.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My love for music is boundless, and I’m always pushing the boundaries by exploring different genres. From rap to R&B, I’ve got it all covered. But what really sets me apart is my unique approach to music. I’ve teamed up with the incredibly talented artist, engineer, and producer, Korus$ to create something truly special. He’s helped me with vocal coaching, producing, and thinking outside the box when it comes to creating music.

My inspiration comes from some of the biggest names in the game, including Doja Cat, BkTheRula, Billie Eilish, X, and Ski Mask. My vibe is a mix of a maximalist living her best life, turning up and not needing a man, to an introverted girl next door who creates music in her bedroom. With such a diverse range of music, I’m confident that anyone can find at least one song they’ll love.

I’m a true one-woman show when it comes to my music career. I create my own album/single cover art, promote my music, and even make my own beats. I’m all about the hustle and grind, and I love everything to do with music.

But that’s not all! I’m also a talented model who’s been featured in the Flow Friday Series and Style and Fashion for major designers like Designer of the Year recipient Nyla Couture. I’m a true triple threat, and I’m not slowing down anytime soon.

Music is my life, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5-10 years, I’m going to be doing some big things. Picture this: I’ll be strutting across the stage at the Los Angeles Film School, clutching not one but two degrees in audio production and music business. But, my ultimate aspiration reaches far beyond personal accolades. I want to establish an all-female label where engineers, producers, rappers, singers, and writers can thrive and create together. Imagine the power and creativity that would come from such a collective force. It’s a dream that fuels my every waking moment. Oh, and let’s not forget the gold plaque on my wall and brand deals with Jordan, Beats by Dre, and some delicious food joints. I aspire to be recognized as one of the top female engineers in the industry. Collaborating with the likes of Cardi B, Nicki Minaj, SZA, and a bunch of other talented individuals is a dream that ignites a fire within me.
