Daily Inspiration: Meet Jules Kain

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jules Kain.

Hi Jules, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hey guys, my name is Jules Kain. I was born in Pasadena, California on Christmas Day, and I grew up in a deeply musical household rooted in Gospel music and ministry. On both sides of my family, ministry and music have been part of our heritage for generations. My father pastored, directed choirs, and played music in church for many years. After teaching my older brother a few chords and songs, my brother Jonathan passed some of that knowledge down to me. About a year later, I played in church for the first time at only five years old.

Growing up, Gospel music was all I knew. As I became a teenager, I also fell in love with Classical music and became fascinated by the works of Beethoven, Chopin, Mozart, and Bach. At the time, I was still largely self-taught and used every resource I could find to learn, from player pianos and MIDI files to recordings and eventually YouTube lessons.

At the same time, I was also working professionally in entertainment as a child actor, appearing in various television shows and commercials. Growing up around both music and entertainment helped shape my creativity and showed me how powerful storytelling and media can be when it comes to reaching people.

As my passion for music continued to grow, I eventually pursued formal training and studied at Santa Monica College, The Colburn School, and Berklee School of Music. While I appreciated the technical and classical foundation I received, I still noticed a major lack of accessible and authentic educational resources for traditional Gospel music, especially within the Black Gospel genre.

Years of serving in churches throughout Los Angeles and within African American denominations gave me firsthand experience with the musical language, traditions, and culture of Gospel music. During that time, I became frustrated by how difficult it was to find lessons, sheet music, and mentorship that truly reflected the authentic sound and feeling of Gospel music. A lot of the resources I found either oversimplified the music or didn’t really explain what was happening. Many lessons simply demonstrated songs at full speed without teaching the musical language, structure, or emotion behind what was being played.

That frustration pushed me deeper into studying pioneers of Gospel music such as Rev. James Cleveland, Andraé Crouch, Walter and Edwin Hawkins, Richard Smallwood, and many others. The more I studied, the more I realized there were musicians all over the world searching for the same thing I had been searching for growing up: authentic Gospel instruction that was both accurate and easy to understand.

Eventually, I began uploading free Gospel piano lessons online simply to help others learn the music that meant so much to me. I honestly did not expect much from it at first, but the response was incredibly encouraging. People continually asked for more tutorials, sheet music, MIDI files, chord charts, and educational tools. Over time, what started as a passion project slowly grew into my business, Jules Kain Music.

Today, I create Gospel piano tutorials, sheet music, MIDI files, chord charts, and educational resources for musicians around the world through YouTube, social media, online lessons, and my website. Across my platforms, I’ve built an audience of over 100,000 subscribers and followers, and my website has grown into a full-time business serving musicians, churches, choir directors, and students internationally. Over the years, I’ve been blessed to help musicians from all over the world learn Gospel music through tutorials, transcriptions, lessons, and educational resources.

I’ve also always cared about preserving Gospel songs and traditions that may not be mainstream, but still mean a lot to people.

As the business continued to grow, my family became a major part of the journey as well. My wife “Kristen Kain” now helps manage customer service and communication for the business, and I’ve also built a small team that helps me serve musicians around the world.

At the heart of everything I do is a passion for preserving Gospel music culture and making it more accessible for future generations. I know what it feels like to search endlessly for authentic lessons that are easy to understand and come up empty. Because of that, my goal has always been to create the kind of lessons, resources, and guidance that I wish I had growing up.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it definitely has not been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has honestly been balancing the amount of demand with the amount of time available. As the platform and business continued to grow, more people began requesting tutorials, sheet music, MIDI files, lessons, and custom transcriptions than I could realistically handle by myself.

At the same time, I’ve had to learn how to remain present for my wife, my children, the churches we attend and serve at, and the communities we’re involved in. Since much of what I do is creative work, it can sometimes be difficult to separate work from personal life because the ideas, projects, and requests never really stop. There’s always another song to transcribe, another lesson to film, another customer to help, or another project to finish.

Another major challenge was learning how to transition from simply being a musician into becoming a business owner and leader. Early on, I was mostly focused on the creative side, but as the business grew, I had to learn how to build systems, manage customer communication, organize my time more effectively, and eventually build a team so the business could continue growing in a healthy way without completely burning me out.

I also think one challenge that many creatives face is the pressure to constantly produce and stay relevant online. Social media and content creation can easily become overwhelming if you’re not careful, especially when you genuinely care about the quality of the work you’re putting out.

At the same time, I’m incredibly grateful for those challenges because most of them came as a result of growth. What started as a genuine passion for Gospel music unexpectedly grew into something that now reaches people all over the world, and that is something I never take for granted.

I’m still learning every day, and I honestly believe the journey never truly ends. But I feel blessed to wake up each day doing work that I genuinely love while helping preserve and share music that means so much to so many people.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
What I do mainly centers around Gospel music education and music transcription. Through my business, Jules Kain Music, I teach people how to play Gospel music authentically while also creating Gospel piano tutorials, sheet music, MIDI files, chord charts, and other educational resources designed to help musicians learn in a practical and accessible way.

I specialize primarily in traditional and contemporary Black Gospel music, particularly piano performance, music theory, transcription, and recreating authentic church-style arrangements. A major part of my work involves carefully studying recordings and creating detailed sheet music and MIDI transcriptions that stay as true as possible to the original sound, feeling, and spirit of the music.

Over the years, I’ve become especially known for breaking down Gospel music in a way that feels approachable for musicians who may not have access to formal training or mentorship. A lot of people discover my content because they are searching for songs, styles, or musical techniques that can be difficult to find accurate resources for online.

One thing I’m especially proud of is being able to help people learn music that genuinely means something to them personally. Often, the music that impacts people the most is not necessarily the most popular. Many meaningful songs and arrangements may not be widely known, yet they still deeply touch people’s lives and carry tremendous emotional and spiritual value. I’ve always had a heart for helping preserve and teach those songs as well.

I’m also incredibly grateful that what started with uploading free lessons online has grown into a worldwide platform serving musicians, churches, choir directors, students, and aspiring artists every day. Being able to help preserve and pass down Gospel music traditions and culture means a great deal to me personally because this music has had such a profound impact on my own life.

I think what sets me apart is that my approach comes from both real church experience and formal musical training. I didn’t just study Gospel music academically, I grew up playing it in church from a very young age. It’s part of who I am, and something that has been passed down through generations in my family.

At the same time, studying Classical music and formal theory gave me a broader understanding of music as a whole. Because of that combination, I try to teach Gospel music in a way that preserves the authenticity, feeling, and cultural roots of the music while also making it understandable and accessible for people who genuinely want to learn.

More than anything, I want people to feel encouraged. My goal is not simply to teach notes and chords, but to help people connect with the heart and spirit behind the music. Gospel music carries messages of hope, joy, peace, love, and truth. There’s something deeply powerful, uplifting, and healing about it, and I believe people can truly feel that when they hear it.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I think authenticity has played one of the biggest roles in my journey. I never wanted to create watered-down content or teach Gospel music in a way that felt disconnected from the culture, emotion, and spirit behind it. Because I genuinely love this music and grew up surrounded by it, I believe it deserves to be taught, preserved, and performed with care, respect, and accuracy. I think people can feel that sincerity in the way I teach and approach my work.

Another important quality has simply been having a heart to help people. A lot of what eventually became my business started from me trying to solve problems that I personally struggled with as a musician. I know how frustrating it can feel to search endlessly for a song, lesson, or resource and come up empty, especially when you’re sincerely trying to learn.

Because of that, I’ve always tried to create lessons and resources that are not only informative, but also encouraging, accessible, and genuinely useful for musicians at different stages of their journey. I think focusing on serving people first, rather than simply chasing growth or numbers, has been a major reason why my platform has connected with so many people around the world.

At the end of the day, I never wanted this to feel like just content on the internet. I wanted people to feel helped, inspired, encouraged, and connected to the music in a real way.
