Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina DeBaca.
Gina, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Born into a family of dancers. Loved dancing for as long as I can remember. Studied dance since four years of age. Attended college and majored in both Anthropology and Dance. The Dance School and Cultural Center was created due to mass gentrification in Santa Monica. All of a sudden, we no longer had Folklorico Dance groups. I have always been involved in the community so I took the initiative and started teaching dance in our yard and parking lot. Eventually, I secured a dance studio, and we have continued to grow and expand. We currently teach Aztec Dance, Ballet Folklorico, Belly Dance, and Hawaiian Dance.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When embarking on my business venture, I faced hurdles in securing funds and locating an affordable space. The steep costs of properties on the Westside at times left me feeling defeated. But then I Remembered All the Supportive Community Members I have worked with for years and We Partnered up, collaborated, and shared space.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am the Founder and Director of ‘Santa Monica Dance Company,’ a dance school and cultural center in Santa Monica aiming to maintain and share Latino and Native American culture in our growing community. We specialize in teaching a diverse range of dance forms, including Aztec Dance and Drum, Ballet Folklorico Dance, Belly Dance, and Hawaiian Dance and Instruments. Additionally, we host monthly visits from elders who conduct ceremonies, workshops, and other cultural events.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Networking has come easily for me, thanks to my active involvement in the community. The key is to maintain an attitude of service. Seek guidance from successful individuals, and don’t hesitate to ask questions. You’ll find that most people are willing to assist and share their insights.
