Daily Inspiration: Meet Ethan Hoffman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ethan Hoffman

Ethan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
From a young age in Palos Verdes, California, I was surrounded by creativity and the arts. My family, while not musical in the traditional sense, fostered a strong sense of appreciation for expression and creativity in all forms. I was a curious child, constantly seeking ways to communicate and create. Music was always a part of me, though it wasn’t until my teenage years that I truly began to realize its significance in my life. However, those same teenage years were also marked by deep struggles with insecurity and a sense of not belonging.

In high school, I faced challenges that made it hard to find my place. I wasn’t an athlete, and the performing arts felt like a distant dream I was too afraid to pursue due to fear of being judged. I became involved with a group of kids who shared a common interest in escaping reality through substances. At the time, smoking weed provided an illusory sense of confidence, but it was also a way for me to avoid the underlying issues of self-worth and direction I struggled with. My grades dropped, and my motivation for anything other than short-term pleasure completely waned.

Seeing the sadness in my parents’ eyes was a turning point for me. I realized then and there that I didn’t want to be stuck in a cycle of self-doubt and self-destruction anymore. I wanted more for my life.

I sought a place where I could rebuild my sense of purpose and where structure could help me focus. That’s when I discovered the Army and Navy Academy.

The decision to attend the an all-male military boarding schoo was life-changing. As I walked through the gates, I felt a sense of belonging I had never experienced before. The school’s strong sense of brotherhood, discipline, and structure was exactly what I needed. I threw myself into my studies, leadership opportunities, and physical training.

Despite being a transfer student in my second semester of sophomore year, I set my sights on a leadership position most thought was out of reach for someone in my position: First Sergeant. I dedicated myself fully to learning everything I could from my peers and mentors. I observed the cadets who had leadership roles and took advice from faculty members. Within a year, I was entrusted with overseeing 55 cadets.

Serving in this role was the beginning of a significant personal transformation. I learned the importance of relationships and how a leader’s success is tied to the growth and well-being of the people they lead. My continued work ethic at the Academy culminated in being selected as Battalion Commander, the highest rank at the school. It was a testament to the transformation I had undergone—from a lost, insecure teenager to a confident, capable leader. Through this experience, I learned that leadership is not just about authority—it’s about serving others and helping them find their potential.

After graduating from the Academy, I went on to study at the University of Southern California (USC). This marked another new chapter in my life, one that involved more independence, new friendships, and academic challenges. It was at USC where I rekindled my love for music. I began to pursue music more seriously, knowing that this was something that had always been in my heart, waiting to be nurtured. I immersed myself in songwriting, producing, and performing. It was a time of self-discovery, not just as a musician, but as a person finding my true path.

Then, something unexpected happened that changed the course of my music career. In November 2024, a TikTok video of me at a comedy show with comedian Morgan Jay went viral. This wasn’t something I had planned for, but it turned out to be a powerful moment that expanded my audience and made me realize the potential of connecting with people through social media. The video is currently sitting at over 127 million views.

I began to leverage this newfound exposure by releasing my debut single, “Making It Up As We Go,” which was met with positive feedback from listeners around the world. The response solidified my belief that music was a career worth pursuing. I continue to write and record, preparing the release of my first album

Looking back, I see how far I’ve come—from a young boy struggling to find his place to a leader at a military academy to an emerging artist with a growing audience. My journey has been shaped by my commitment to growth, my ability to embrace challenges, and my dedication to staying true to who I am. Now, I’m focused on taking my music to new heights. I’m currently in the heart of Los Angeles, where I’ll continue to perform and share my music with a larger audience, all while continuing to develop my craft.

Through everything I’ve experienced, I’ve learned that growth comes through adversity and that staying true to your authentic self is the key to success. Music has always been a part of me, but now it’s the way I connect with the world. It’s the tool I use to tell my story and to inspire others to believe in their own potential.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s safe to say that my journey has been the least smooth road imaginable, but I wouldn’t change a thing. The struggles, challenges, and moments of doubt are what made the journey so meaningful and ultimately shaped me into the person I am today.

As a teenager, I felt like I was lost in a fog. Insecurity and a fear of failure kept me from pursuing the things I truly cared about, like music and performing. Instead, I sought validation in all the wrong places, which led me down a path of poor choices and a lack of direction. The hardest part wasn’t just facing my own struggles—it was seeing the sadness in my parents’ eyes and knowing that I was letting them down. That moment of realization was painful, but it became the spark I needed to make a change.

When I enrolled at the Army and Navy Academy, I wasn’t sure what to expect. It was a complete 180 from the life I had been living—going from an unstructured environment to one that demanded discipline and accountability was a shock to my system. The initial adjustment was one of the toughest periods of my life. There were moments when I doubted whether I could meet the high expectations I had set for myself, let alone rise to the level of leadership I eventually achieved. But those challenges taught me resilience, focus, and the importance of perseverance.

Even after leaving the Academy and stepping into the world of higher education at USC, the road was anything but easy. Juggling academics, personal growth, and my rediscovery of music was overwhelming at times. Breaking into the music industry was a whole new challenge—it’s a world full of uncertainty, rejection, and setbacks. Releasing my first single and preparing my debut album has been exciting, but it’s also been a test of patience and persistence.

The journey wasn’t just about external challenges; it was about overcoming my own self-doubt. When the TikTok video with Morgan Jay went viral, it wasn’t an immediate “fairy tale” moment. I had to work hard to capitalize on the opportunity and stay grounded amidst the sudden attention. It was another reminder that success doesn’t come from luck alone—it comes from showing up, being authentic, and putting in the work, day after day.

Looking back, the struggles were the most important part of my journey. They taught me the value of perseverance, the power of self-belief, and the importance of staying true to my passion, no matter how rocky the road might get. I’m grateful for every bump in the road because it made the ride so much more rewarding. If the path had been smooth, I wouldn’t have the depth of appreciation or the stories that I now get to share through my music. For me, the beauty of the journey lies in the challenges—it’s where the real growth happens.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work is all about connecting with people through music and storytelling. I specialize in blending heartfelt vocals with skilled guitar playing to create a performance that’s both captivating and emotionally resonant. One of the things I’m most proud of is my ability to not only sing and play guitar but to do both exceptionally well at the same time. It’s a skill that takes precision and practice, and I’ve worked hard to develop the coordination and stage presence needed to deliver a seamless experience for my audience.

What sets me apart is the way I approach songwriting and performing. My music is deeply introspective—it’s the kind of storytelling that makes people pause, put their phones down, and really listen. I write songs that explore universal themes of love, loss, growth, and self-discovery, drawing from my own experiences and emotions. I want my listeners to feel seen and understood, and my goal is always to create a moment where they can reflect and connect with the music on a personal level.

On stage, I’m known for my charisma and ability to interact with the crowd. I don’t just perform to an audience—I perform with them. I make it a point to look people in the eyes, to engage with them directly, and to make every person in the room feel like they’re part of the experience. Whether it’s sharing a laugh, exchanging a glance, or leading a sing-along, I believe that live performance is about creating a genuine connection. That authenticity is what brings people back, and it’s something I take pride in every time I step on stage.

What I’m most proud of is how my music brings people together. In a world where distractions are everywhere, the fact that I can hold someone’s attention, even for just a few minutes, feels incredibly meaningful. It’s a reminder that music has the power to connect us in ways words alone sometimes can’t. That’s what drives me as an artist—the opportunity to create those moments of connection and to share a piece of my soul with the world.

How do you define success?
I define success by the presence of genuine joy in life—success is shown in your smile. If you’re smiling through life, finding joy in the little things, and moving at a pace that allows you to savor the journey, then you’re winning. To me, success isn’t about titles, accolades, or material wealth. It’s about lightness—being able to approach life with a sense of ease and gratitude, even in the face of challenges.

I often gauge my success by my own smile, and I think you can do the same for others. It doesn’t matter if you’re a billionaire or just starting out in life; if your smile is missing, something deeper is out of balance. For me, the ultimate goal is to live with a sense of fulfillment and inner peace. It’s about creating a life where I can take myself lightly and appreciate the beauty of the world around me.

I believe in the ancient idea that the only gateway to heaven—whether literal or metaphorical—is to be as light as a feather. Smiling, both literally and figuratively, allows you to take life less seriously, to laugh at its absurdities, and to embrace its imperfections. When you can do that, you’ve achieved something far greater than material success. You’ve found the kind of happiness that can’t be bought, only cultivated. That, to me, is the true essence of success.
