Today we’d like to introduce you to Dyrel “Dice” White.
Dyrel “Dice”, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
So I’m proud with the production I made in life because I come from Camden/Mt Holly New Jersey which aren’t & weren’t the best places to grow up in. To get out of there & progress the way I have is remarkable. I wouldn’t take anything away from the way I grew up because growing up in the city made me the man I am & prepared me to be ready for anything the world has to bring. What got me here today was I moved to California from Jersey. I was doing music & came to Cali to pursue that. Once I got to Cali I realized a different life better than what I was in. I was a big time damn near kingpin in the marijuana business back home (Jersey). But was also real big locally in the rap game. I was the person that was the life of the party. Always wore the new sneakers & trending clothes. Shopped in NY a lot because that’s where fashion was first to hit. Everybody wanted to be in my circle. But after a while I realized that it was more in life for me rather than running the streets of the tri-state area (Jersey, Philly, New York). I felt in my soul that I was meant to be a star & my mom always embedded that into me. When I came to Cali to record some songs I fell in love with the Hollywood life. So my friend from high school Harvey offered me to move to Cali in his place & I accepted 2wks after my first visit. I was tired of walking around with a gun & the visualization of crack heads & poverty everyday. Once I got to Cali I found a well known barbershop called “in the cut” in North Hollywood after working at a Salon called Smoothe Operators for a year. 4 out of 7 barbers at “in the cut” were comedians. The app Vine was popular at the time & Tony Rock said that our shop was funny & that we should do a vine video showing how funny barbershops could be. We didn’t know anything about vine or social media in 2010 so we looked it up & did a video. That video went viral everywhere! Now we have attention & social media heat. We decided to do more. No barbers were doing funny barbershop videos or sketches until we started doing them. We were the pioneers of funny barbershop videos. Got recognition from the biggest barbershop social media account called barbershopconnect with a funniest barbers plaque. We got so big that we did another viral video with Mike Epps. Robert Townsend took notice in us & said we reminded him of the “I’m gonna get you sucka” days & brought Garrick Tre & I a bottle of champagne for our success & invited us to a BET event where he introduced us to everyone as the new up & coming of social media because we tapped into a lane nobody else was in. From there most of your biggest social media people noticed us & wanted to shoot barbershop videos with us. We had people flying in from all over the world to shoot with us “funny barbers” on Mondays which we were subject to shooting on due to it being 1 of the slowest days of the week. From there it was all go! It definitely wasn’t easy because we had so many people that wanted to shoot with us now that we had to figure out a role for the 20’s of people that showed up on Mondays. But we got everybody in & gave them their shine. Now I sit here with over 1 million followers between all my social media accounts & still growing. I got into acting because my woman told me that she knew a acting class ran by Phaedra Harris who is a casting Director. My woman said that since I was big in social media that I should tap into the acting world because everything came natural & she wasn’t wrong. I got into her audition lab class & immediately she took notice in me. I’m sort of a nerd when it comes to doing anything I set goals to. 2wks into the class & she got me a audition for a show by Tami Roman called “Haus of Vicious” & I booked a recurring role as “Jump”. The same day I also got booked on a show by Carl Weber called “The Family Business New Orleans” a spin off of the original well known & award winning “The Family Business”. So ironic because these 2 were booked on my 2nd week of class on February 22nd which is 2/22. All angel numbers. This let me know that I was walking in gods path & doing another thing I was set out to do & became very good at it. The kid from Jersey moved to Cali & now doing tv shows & looking to do movies. I never could have imagined! So my woman was right. Everybody needs that good backbone in their corner to let them be them & show infinite support in what they do. She has definitely done that. Get you a Queen that believes in your visions!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing that is pivotal in life is a smooth road unless you were privileged enough to come from a family with money. That wasn’t me. Everything I did in life was a journey. I didn’t meet my dad until I was 16-20 then reconnected from 27-now. My mom (Mom Dukes) was the backbone of everything I’ve been able to accomplish. Too bad she had a stroke a couple years ago & her mental isn’t where it should be to understand & appreciate what I’ve accomplished but I know inside she knows it but can’t express it.
Struggles were always a thing growing up. Living with my mom & my aunt Tida through elementary & high school years with my sister Kanisha & my 3 cousins Punkin, Boosha & Pooh which are more like brothers to me because we grew up in the same houses & apartments together. But I never wanted to be the bummy looking kid in school because of non wealth so I took on a summer job at 14 & was able to kind of provide for myself. Played basketball & football from 7yrs old until I went to college for football. But in the midst of that I got caught up in the weed game at 16 but was always 2 steps ahead of people because I consider myself a very smart, logical & coordinated person. So I didn’t get caught doing what I was doing but kept everybody around me eating so I didn’t build haters. I definitely was a name to know in the tri state area for what I did. I don’t regret any of it because like I said before. It made me who I am today. Always driven & going against the odds to be successful at anything I pursued. So the struggle was always real but I always kept my head up & knew bigger things were coming for me
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a father first. Barber, Actor, Entrepreneur, influencer & soon to be husband. I specialize in all that but things people don’t know is that I also could build a house from the foundation up. Went to Puerto Rico to build a house. Most people don’t know that I’m also part Puerto Rican. Shout out to my grandpops Domingo Pabon which I named my son after. But I used to also build airport hangers, wineries & build sunrooms & decks. So I’m a crafty dude in all aspects.
What sets me apart from others I think is that I’m inner driven. I look for goals & go 1,000% at it until it’s achieved & then I look for the next goal. I never give up. Giving up is for the weak & I’m very strong minded
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I wouldn’t say luck. I would say that I’m blessed & being looked over by God. Because there are plenty of situations where if I didn’t believe in God that I would’ve went down the wrong path. So I say it’s more God than luck
