Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Lee.
Hi Christy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my content creator journey on YouTube back in 2010, posting simple recipe videos after graduating from culinary school. At the time, it was purely a hobby, a way for me to share what I was cooking at home. I didn’t have fancy cameras, lighting, or even editing skills. I just had a love for food and a curiosity for new culinary ideas, especially from those hidden hole in the wall spots and Michelin starred restaurants I would visit and quietly take inspiration from.
For years, I never thought to document these experiences online as a food influencer. My Instagram originally served as more of a personal food diary rather than a platform for promotion or partnerships. That mindset shifted during COVID, when I realized I could begin monetizing years of experience I had already been building simply for joy. That was when I started to take content creation more seriously.
Like many creators, I was entirely self-taught. I spent countless hours learning how to film, edit, and understand the language of social media often through trial and error. Having grown up in the MySpace and Xanga era, my early familiarity with social platforms was limited to Facebook and YouTube. Instagram became the space where I began to intentionally shape my identity as a food influencer and content creator.
Over time, that evolution led to brand collaborations and partnerships with restaurants. Content creation came naturally to me because food had always been at the center of my life, whether I was dining out or cooking in my own kitchen. My culinary background gave me the confidence to review restaurants and food products with honesty and depth.
Eventually, my work expanded beyond food into skincare, particularly K beauty, which was growing in popularity. Having already explored and used these products personally, I was able to recommend them authentically to my audience. What began as a simple passion project has grown into a career shaped by curiosity, consistency, and a lifelong love of food and storytelling.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a content creator has come with a lot of behind-the-scenes challenges that people don’t always see.
When I started in 2010, I didn’t have fancy equipment, lighting, or editing skills. I was just figuring everything out as I went. I’ve always been more of a cook first, so learning how to translate food into content that actually performs on camera was a whole different skill set.
Over the years, I’ve also had to constantly adapt to changing platforms from YouTube to Instagram to short form video while trying to stay true to my own style of cooking and storytelling.
There were also a lot of moments of slow growth, where the work didn’t always match the reach, and learning how to navigate brand partnerships and value my work came with time and experience.
On top of that, doing everything on my own such as cooking, filming, editing, posting while balancing real life definitely came with its own set of challenges.
But looking back, every part of that process shaped how I create today, and how I connect with people through food.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve built a professional career spanning over 20 years as a Piano and Violin teacher, working closely with students of all ages and levels. Teaching music has been a consistent part of my life, centered around discipline, creativity, and helping others develop both technical skill and confidence through performance.
In the last few years, I expanded my work into social media management and content creation. This shift came naturally from my long time passion for food, storytelling, and sharing experiences online. It has required me to learn new skills in digital strategy, video production, editing, and audience engagement, while continuing to manage my teaching responsibilities.
Balancing both roles has been demanding but rewarding, combining structured, one on one music instruction with the fast-paced, ever changing world of digital content. Together, these experiences have shaped a well rounded professional path rooted in education, creativity, and adaptability.
How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is creating and sharing things that feel meaningful whether that’s through teaching music, cooking, or storytelling online.
As a Piano and Violin teacher for over 20 years, I’ve always found happiness in watching students grow over time. There’s something very fulfilling about seeing a concept finally “click,” or hearing a student perform with confidence after weeks of practice. Those small moments of progress feel just as rewarding as any big milestone.
I also find happiness in cooking and content creation because it allows me to express creativity in a different way. Food brings people together, and sharing recipes or ideas online lets me connect with others beyond my immediate classroom. Even though it’s a different skill set, it still ties back to the same core thing I love teaching, sharing, and inspiring.
At the end of the day, what makes me happiest is being able to create something that has an impact on someone else’s life, even in a small way.
