Today we’d like to introduce you to China Lovelace. They and their team shared their story with us below:
China Lovelace is a millennial media gworl! The media personality, influencer, and artist is a Bay Area native. Growing up in San Leandro, CA, and raised in Stockton, CA, China has always had her eyes on the spotlight!
Her first love in the industry was radio. During her undergraduate studies at Virginia State University, she fell in love with radio. China interned at Radio One Richmond, VA, and was an on-air personality at VSU’s radio station “The Source, 91.3 WVST,” where she excelled during her weekend and afternoon shifts.
Upon graduating in May 2012, her connections landed her an on-air role at 99.5 Jamz in Roanoke Rapids, NC. China has stayed true to herself and kept the mentality she learned while working in radio as “wearing multiple hats.”
In 2015 China returned to the Bay Area, where she launched her “Always Relevant TV. While continuing to expand her professional career, she joined the staff for an urban blog before working with her current employer, “The Shade Room.”
China recently dropped her first single, “Pretty Girl Freestyle,” produced by Houston’s own Beatking.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey to working at The Shade Room wasn’t glitz and glamour. I worked so many jobs I hated while pursuing a career in media. I even experienced a period when I was on food stamps and unemployed. I can remember feeling defeated and not landing any jobs in media. I felt like my degree was a waste and that I should try to find a job in HR. Although it was tough I kept my eye on the prize and continued to chase my dreams, which eventually paid off.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a media gworl, I like to think I can do it all. I enjoy content creation and social media strategy. I can really take an idea and bring it to life. I also love being a media personality. I’m most proud of the work that I do now and all the things I did on my journey here. In addition, as a new artist, I am learning and growing. I believe what sets me apart from others is that I’m not afraid to take risks!
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
What works best for me when networking is going to events alone and not being afraid to speak to people. I always set a goal of connecting with three people & do my best to stay in contact with them.
