Daily Inspiration: Meet chef Lisajo Elsis and chef Amy Scotti

Today we’d like to introduce you to chef Lisajo Elsis and chef Amy Scotti

Hi Lisajo and Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Amy Scotti and I met on a food blog on Facebook during the Covid shutdown of 2020. We began to chat daily. When the Governor of New Jersey began to re-open the state, she and I met for lunch. We became instant friends. We were both life-long bakers and cooks. We got together almost daily at either my home or Amy’s and began to bake together. It was during one of these afternoons that I remarked to Amy that our local community college had a Pastry Arts Program that was rated 6th in the nation and that we should enroll as full time students. Our husbands both agreed and we applied and were accepted. It was a grueling, excelerated program. I was 66 when we attended, Amy was 63. We were inducted into Phi Theta Kapa for academic excellence. Three weeks after graduation we opened our little shop at The BellWorks Farmers Market and have been growing steadily ever since. Our business is booming and we have gone from friends to family.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
So far it has been a relatively smooth ride. Amy and I share a life long dream of becoming Chefs and building a boutique business. We have been blessed with the opportunity to make that dream come true. Chef Amy and I face our fears of success and failure together. We face the daily struggle with finances like every other small business. Currently, we are facing the struggle of transitioning from a farmers market venue to a brick and mortar. Arranging financing, working with the town council and the Mayor, etc., while still maintaining our 12 hour a day baking schedule. Like every other detail and each brick in the path, we choose to meet this challenge like every other one, together.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Amy and I work “hand in glove”. We write all of our own recipes, bake everything ourselves, design and package all of the products ourselves, take care of our own social media, etc. We care deeply about every product we create. We take the time to get to know our customers and their families. We use ONLY the best ingredients available. We are most proud of the quality and diversity of our products. We are known for our high quality, delicious baked goods, our beautiful packaging, our creativity and attention to detail, our work ethic and personal integrity and the relationships we build and maintain with all of our customers.

We think what sets us apart from other bakers, is not only our creativity, talent and dedication to perfection, but our deep and abiding friendship with each other. As custom bakers, we always bake with our customers in mind.

We specialize in scones, cakes, cookies, pies, tarts and breads.

What matters most to you? Why?
We are committed to creating baked goods made from the finest ingredients, yielding the highest quality end product possible. We care deeply about every one of our customers. We want to create raving fans that return to our shop frequently, bringing their children and friends with them. We want to create a sense of community. We are driven to share our success with our community and so we donate 10% of every single sale we make to local charitable organizations.
