Daily Inspiration: Meet Caroline Plyler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Plyler.

Hi Caroline , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began modeling as a baby and modeled all the way through my twenties. In my late twenties I realized that I needed to pivot and learn a different skill in front of the camera, so I learned acting. I took classes with Anthony Abeson in New York and officially began my acting career. I soon realized that acting wasn’t my passion, story telling was, as I’ve always considered myself a writer. I was then given the invaluable advice to become a script supervisor to learn how to become a director. So, I took Randi Feldman’s course on script supervision and began my career as a script supervisor. After three years as a script supervisor, I finally was given an opportunity to direct professionally and have been a director ever since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most definitely not a smooth road. I have been on my own without any family support since my mother died when I was seventeen. I never had a safety net of a family to fall back onto if work didn’t pan out. I have learned how to trust myself, to survive off of nothing, and to build a community of friends to help catch you when you fall.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a filmmaker. Right now I am known as being a director for the platform CandyJar who makes micro dramas based off of their romance novels. I am most proud of my short film that I have written and is in the funding stages. It’s the story of my mother’s death and it has been a journey figuring out how to tell this story, but I think i’ve finally cracked the code. I think what sets me apart from others is the fact that I have had to go out there and really create this career for myself. I didn’t go to film school, I didn’t have a family help me get onto my feet, I literally came from nothing and just kept following my dream and turned it into something. That in itself isn’t unique but my personal story around that is what makes it unique.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like best is the quality of life. I moved here from New York City so to be able to live in a place with nature, amazing grocery stores and to live in an apartment with indoor/outdoor space has been incredible. What I like least about the city is how spread out everything is. Coming from a walkable city to one where I have to be in a car all the time is a big change.
