Daily Inspiration: Meet Berry Boo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Berry Boo.

Hi Berry, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always been into the arts. Growing up in dance companies, marching bands and singing groups. Basically, anything that kept me creative… But my life changed once I started working at the Legendary Ashford & Simpson’s “Sugar Bar”… which a popular music/restaurant venue on the west side in Manhattan, NYC. There I started singing backgrounds for a lot of local artists which then turned into major a-list artists. Word of mouth goes a long way :). After years of touring, I started working on my own material. And in 2012, I made the transition from the background to the forefront with my 1st single release followed by my debut LP in 2013. Now here I am today with two successful projects (IMBERRYDAMNIT LP & CLUTCH) with credits on two Grammy Nominated projects… Kanye West’s (“Yeezus & The Life Of Pablo”) albums.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been blessed to have a great journey but there’s always going to be bumps on the road. That part is inevitable. Getting people to recognize me as my own artist was a challenge. A lot of people expected me to do the same kind of music as the artist I sung for. And at one point in time, I started abandoning what came natural to me. That didn’t turn out so well, lol. Now I don’t choose. I’m a rapper/singer and I do what I organically feel when I hear a record. I think my audience understands that now. I in fact, understand that now. Knowing who your core audience and demographic is, is very important.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a visual artist. I’m not one dimensional. I sing, I rap, I dance, I act. A true creative at heart. My look is ever-changing. People look forward to what hairstyle I’m doing next. What color it’s going to be and what outfit I’mma show up in. So I’ve realized how much of a brand I am. I now have an apparel/home decor line with my images on it called “B City Collection”… moving into cosmetics and fragrances in the near future.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think entrepreneurship is in everyone’s future. I think the way social media and the music industry is designed now, you have to own your own. No more waiting on “help”. All the resources are at your figure tips. Not saying it’s easier but it’s definitely more rewarding.
