Today we’d like to introduce you to Arpan Karki.
Hi Arpan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
NepCali was born about 11 years ago, when a group of Nepalese immigrants came to the United States chasing the traditional “American Dream” through academics. Music wasn’t the original plan—it started as an experimental outlet, a way to stay connected to their roots while navigating a completely new life. What began as casual jam sessions slowly evolved into something much bigger.
As they started sharing their sound—a fusion of Nepali influences with rock and metal—they found a growing audience that truly connected with their message and identity. That support became the turning point. What was once just an experiment turned into a serious pursuit, pushing the band to commit fully to their craft.
Today, NepCali represents more than just music—it’s a journey of identity, culture, and persistence. From students trying to find their place in a new country to artists building a movement, they’ve stayed rooted in their mission: to proudly represent Nepalese culture while creating music that resonates across borders.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many immigrant artists, we’ve had to navigate challenges beyond just music—balancing cultural expectations, academics, and the realities of building a life in a new country. In the early days, family support wasn’t always there, and financially it’s been an ongoing struggle that we’re still working through today.
We’ve also faced some deeply personal setbacks. We lost our manager to suicide, which was incredibly difficult for all of us, and at one point a co-founder stepped away from the band. On top of that, there have been multiple lineup changes over the years, which tested our stability and direction.
But through all of it, those experiences shaped who we are today. They made us stronger, more resilient, and more grounded—not just as musicians, but as individuals. Every challenge reinforced our purpose and pushed us to keep going, with even more intention behind our music and our message.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
NepCali is a genre-blending band that fuses Nepali musical roots with rock and metal, creating a sound that’s both culturally grounded and globally accessible. Our work goes beyond just making songs—we focus on storytelling that reflects identity, struggle, and resilience, especially from the perspective of the immigrant experience. Over the years, we’ve built a reputation for high-energy live performances, emotionally driven songwriting, and a sound that feels both unique and authentic. With a strong guitar riffs of Sunny Shrestha and powerful vocals from Arpan Karki, NepCali creates a unique blend of music that’s hits straight to the heart.
We specialize in combining traditional influences with modern intensity—whether it’s through lyrical themes, melodies, or the overall atmosphere of our music. What we’re known for most is our ability to connect with audiences on a deeper level, both in recordings and especially on stage, where the energy becomes a shared experience.
What we’re most proud of is staying consistent with our vision despite all the challenges. From starting as students experimenting with music to headlining iconic venues and building a loyal fanbase, every step has been earned. We’re also proud to represent Nepalese culture in a space where it’s not often seen, and to inspire others from similar backgrounds to pursue creative paths.
What sets us apart is our authenticity. We’re not trying to fit into a mold—we’re creating our own lane by blending cultures, sounds, and experiences that reflect who we truly are. That honesty, combined with our journey and resilience, is what defines NepCali.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Don’t give up your dreams for anything and keep working hard. You will see the success eventually and it will come in the way you never expected. Life is beautiful and use your god gifted talents to make it even better.
