Conversations with Ziyi Zhou

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ziyi Zhou, an accomplished and award-winning designer with exceptional talent.

Hi Ziyi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m currently immersed in the world of user experience and product innovation as a designer. Art has been my passion since childhood, and I’ve always been driven by clear goals. I am dedicated to leveraging my skills to introduce innovation and provide support in demanding environments and people, with the ultimate goal of contributing to the betterment of our world.

Recognizing that my strengths and interests lie in design and innovation, I made a decision after high school to apply to universities with majors related to art and design, with an additional emphasis on a more technology-focused environment. That’s when I discovered the Interaction Design program at the ArtCenter College of Design in Southern California. Successfully gaining admission, I navigated through the program and graduated. Later on, I pursued a Master’s degree in Design at the University of California, Berkeley, under the College of Engineering.

Over the past five years of continuous learning and experience accumulation, I’ve gained valuable insights while working with different companies. My contributions have been acknowledged with awards such as the A’ Design Award, UX Design Award, Muse Design Award, and others. These recognitions fuel my determination to push the boundaries of design and innovation.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
That’s a great question. It hasn’t been an easy journey. Initially, my path faced resistance from my parents, who hoped I would pursue a business major and eventually take over our family company. They were hesitant about my interest in design. However, I had a heartfelt conversation with them, explaining that design is my forte, and I aspire to create sustainable, socially beneficial, and meaningful products through this passion. After this conversation, they understood my perspective and supported my decision.

Moreover, during my academic years, I encountered additional challenges. The programs I enrolled in had a tendency to attract individuals with prior work experience, making me one of the youngest in my class. The peer pressure was intense, but I faced each challenge head-on, refusing to give up. In order to achieve the ideal design effect, I will spend double or more time designing the product. Today, I can proudly say that my perseverance has yielded positive results. I’m immensely thankful for the hard work I put in during those times.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a passionate and experienced UI/UX/Product Designer, my work spans collaborations with prestigious Fortune 500 companies, groundbreaking start-ups, and impactful non-profits. I specialize in harnessing the power of design to address pressing social issues, believing in its potential to make a meaningful impact. My focus is on crafting solutions that authentically cater to the needs and challenges of users.

What sets me apart is my commitment to leveraging emerging technologies and seamlessly integrating 2D and 3D design elements. This allows me to create inclusive and intuitive user experiences that transcend conventional boundaries. I take pride in my ability to contribute to a brighter future through design, constantly pushing the limits to shape innovative and user-centric solutions.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is the power of resilience and adaptability. The path to success is rarely a straight line, and challenges are inevitable. It’s crucial to approach setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning rather than insurmountable obstacles. Adapting to change, whether in the professional or personal realm, has allowed me to navigate through uncertainties and come out stronger on the other side. This ability to persevere, learn from experiences, and remain flexible has been instrumental in my development and achievements.
