Conversations with Teddy Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teddy Kelly.

Hi Teddy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Teddy Kelly. I started drawing as a kid, creating things just for myself. As cliché as it may sound, I was heavily influenced by the surf and skate industry. Growing up in the port city of Mazatlán—a place deeply rooted in surf culture—I spent my summers in the United States visitng my grandparents, where I was constantly exposed to the graphics, apparel, and visual identity of the skate and surf scene.

That experience sparked my interest in pursuing an education related to graphic design. I wanted to create the kinds of graphics that appeared on skateboards, clothing, and gear—the same designs that my friends and I were drawn to. More than the products themselves, I was inspired by the creativity, attitude, and culture that surrounded the skateboarding and surfing communities.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like anything that’s truly worth the time and effort, the journey has been filled with ups and downs. I feel fortunate that I’ve always had a clear vision of what I wanted to do with my life, and that sense of purpose definitely made the less-traveled path a little easier to navigate.

Of course, there have always been people who tried to pull me down or plant seeds of doubt that could have made me question myself or stop pursuing what I loved. Thankfully, none of that ever became an obstacle. I learned to take what was genuinely valuable—even from those people—and use it to grow, both as a person and as an artist.

I stayed focused on mastering my craft while learning about life itself and figuring out how to navigate its challenges. Every experience, whether positive or negative, became another opportunity to improve and keep moving forward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At the beginning, my main focus was finding myself and discovering the creative direction I truly loved, because I knew this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I immersed myself in studying art and design movements, but I also made a conscious effort to stay true to my own instincts. That combination helped me develop my own visual language.

I did the work of building my style while gradually letting go of the influences that had initially guided me there. Those influences were important—they helped shape me—but eventually I wanted my work to speak with its own voice.

I love design and composition. I have ADHD, and for me, creating a balanced composition is almost therapeutic. I naturally seek visual harmony, and I feel the need to resolve every element until it feels right. These days, I’ve learned to let go a little more and embrace imperfections when they serve the work, but for the most part I still stay true to the essential design principles that have become part of my process.

I’m a little obsessive in the best way, and that’s how I continue to develop the style I’m most known for. It’s a never-ending process, and that’s exactly what keeps me motivated. Every day I learn something new, whether it’s adding something to the work or realizing that taking something away makes it even stronger.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
My daughter, my parents, and the people I love have always been an incredible source of support, and I’m deeply grateful for that. But at the end of the day, they’re not the ones who make my decisions—I am. I’ve learned that if we don’t truly love and believe in ourselves, it’s difficult to fully embrace others or have the courage to pursue what we genuinely love as a career.

For me, the most important thing is finding that balance within ourselves. Only then can we bring something meaningful to the table and contribute positively to society. We live in a time where ignorance and hate often seem louder than compassion and understanding, which is why I believe we all have a responsibility to become the best version of ourselves.

No matter what profession or trade we’re in, our goal should be to strive for excellence, continue growing, and become a positive force in this crazy world. If we can do that, our work becomes more than just what we create—it becomes part of the impact we leave behind.
