Conversations with Tally Spear

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tally Spear.

Hi Tally, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up around actors and musicians, so no surprises with where I’ve ended up. My older brother’s punk band used to rehearse in our attic and I wanted to be involved from the age of about 2. My dad taught me the ropes on guitar and I’ve been writing and performing my own music since I was like 11, albeit at local youth fairs and busking…

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’ve had to deal with a lot of issues surrounding self-confidence, identity and performance anxiety while trying to navigate my place in the music business and as an artist. It’s been a long and winding road in the words of Sheryl Crow, a real process of self-development that I’m having to invest in. Sometimes I go through periods where I just want to hide away and delete all my social media and I go quiet, there’s a lot of pressure on artists to show up online and play the influencer game, even when we just want to write music. Trying to take that on can get overwhelming sometimes.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a songwriter first, and the rest of it just comes alongside. I use words to express complicated thoughts that seem almost intangible unless written down. It’s a form of expression and therapy for me. Whatever shit goes down in my life, if an incredible song can be formed from it, nothing is wasted.

What matters most to you?
Connecting with others – for me that comes through words, song, art, and performance… but at the end of the day that’s what matters most to everyone, in every business.
