Conversations with Sebastián Chicchón

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sebastián Chicchón.

Sebastián Chicchón

Hi Sebastián, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started with design by accident, just experimenting, and little by little, I became more interested in it. I have, and still maintain, an Instagram account, @jager.nooon, where I began posting all of my designs. After a while of just posting whatever I did for fun, I realized that some people liked what I did and were interested in working with me. So, I started to teach myself how to use diverse softwares and reaching out to people I admired and whose work I loved. By doing so, I gradually started getting more clients and had amazing opportunities to work with great artists from all over the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think I have learned a lot by just doing it, and of course, I have made many mistakes along the way but learned from them. Maybe I would say my biggest struggle sometimes was having self-confidence in myself, which I feel I have gained throughout the years. That has allowed me to take my work to another level. However, as a freelancer, I still feel in constant struggle sometimes since there are months where I have a lot of work and months where it’s the total opposite.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work mainly as a graphic designer, creating posters, cover art, and title design. However, over the years, I have also developed other skills such as 3D design, motion design, art direction, and photography, so I try to blend all my skills and knowledge when I work. Regarding what I’m most proud of, I would say I’m really proud of having believed in my own ideas and potential and having gained all my clients through persistence, not because I was the son of someone known in the art world or because I had a lot of contacts. I started knowing nobody at all.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
I would say try a lot of different things; don’t try to imitate what everybody is doing. Analyze the work of other people you admire to identify why they are successful or what you can learn from their work. I would also encourage people who are just starting out to try to reach out to as many people as possible.
