Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Howe.
Scott , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Art has been a part of my life since elementary school, shaping not only my creativity but my entire journey. From developing clothing lines and crafting jewelry to owning hip-hop shops and teaching, art has always been the foundation of everything I pursue.
The creation of The Hyste wasn’t part of a master plan—it emerged out of necessity. What began as the only option at the time became a defining chapter. Starting from the ground up was both humbling and transformative, and it’s an experience I wouldn’t trade for anything.
Over the past decade, we’ve brought creative work to more than 300 school campuses and partnered with numerous commercial companies. Each project has strengthened our commitment to authenticity, purpose, and impact.
The philosophy has always been simple: stay in your lane, remain consistent, and let the work speak for itself. Today, we’re grateful to continue expanding our reach, building new relationships, and sharing our vision with clients around the world.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I believe every journey comes with both struggles and rewards. Mine has certainly been interesting and continues to evolve. Building a business from nothing can be intimidating, but I’ve always embraced the challenge. Growth rarely happens in comfort.
Sustaining a business presents its own realities. When most clients operate on net-40 payment terms, cash flow becomes a constant balancing act. Artists still need to be paid regardless of what’s happening behind the scenes. Honoring that responsibility is non-negotiable.
Another ongoing challenge is acquiring new clients in a saturated market where underbidding has become common practice. Competing solely on price can diminish the true value of creative work. Maintaining integrity in pricing while delivering quality requires discipline and confidence.
Through it all, the focus remains the same: stay committed to the craft, protect the value of the work, and continue building with purpose.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in hand-painted murals and custom signage. Over the past ten years, I’ve developed a niche in modernizing murals for schools—transforming campuses through artwork that reflects their culture, environment, and vision. Every project is thoughtfully designed to align with the unique identity and theme desired by each client.
Most recently, I had the honor of designing a mural commemorating 100 years of alumni at Banning High School in Wilmington, CA. The project featured portraits of former students spanning the past century. To ensure each portrait carried its own distinctive energy, I brought in 10 different artists, giving every individual a unique artistic touch.
The unveiling became a true community celebration, bringing together alumni, families, city officials, sponsors, and supporters for a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Witnessing the reactions—from former students and the families of past alumni—was incredibly powerful. Seeing people connect emotionally to the work reminded me why this craft matters.
I was supported by an exceptional crew, and the entire experience reinforced what we stand for at The Hyste: we don’t just paint murals—we create conversation pieces that honor legacy, spark pride, and bring communities together.
What’s next?
The vision is simple: to paint as many campuses and commercial spaces as possible, leaving behind meaningful stories for each community to experience and enjoy. Every wall is an opportunity to create something lasting—something that represents identity, pride, and connection.
Looking ahead, growth means thinking bigger—literally. Larger-scale installations and more ambitious projects are already in the works. The goal is to continue expanding our creative footprint while elevating the scope and impact of each piece.
At The Hyste, we are building toward becoming a true one-stop shop for murals and custom signage—offering concept development, design, and execution under one roof. It’s about providing clients with a seamless creative experience while continuing to raise the standard for what public art can be.
