Conversations with Ronni Kappos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronni Kappos.

Hi Ronni, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started collecting vintage beads in the late 1990s, which led to a life long hunt for vintage glass around the world. I was attracted to their rich quality, history and color. I’ve sourced glass beads in many regions, but my concentration and interest focuses on German vintage beads made during the 1920s through the 60s. Once I amassed a vast array of colors and shapes early in my career, I was able to start designing limited edition collections which first got picked up by Barneys New York in the early 2000s and now are carried in museum shops and boutiques across the country.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve been devoted to vintage materials, so the main struggle is always sourcing. When something runs out, it’s usually gone forever. That can be tough when you’re running a small business, but now I’ve learned that if I find something really special, I just need to go for it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What sets me apart is that I work with vintage beads, but I use them in a distinctly modern way. I like to build interesting shapes with the beads, while keeping in mind my love of modernist design and architecture. The idea of vintage materials and modern ideas mixing together to create something new is endlessly facinating to me.

I’m also known for my color work – I’m always reinventing my rainbow palettes. I love designing with color and coming up with unexpected pairings.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to always stay true to your authentic voice. People respond to a unique vision, which means focusing on your process and interests. I’ve had a singular focus for many years, which has helped hone what I do.
