Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Bremer.
Hi Robert, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began in a quiet, small town. I grew up in a rural area and I started watching movies when I young for something to do. I immediately fell in love. My favorite was “The Mask” with Jim Carry. In middle school, I learned there was a “History of Film” class, and I looked forward to taking the class. In that class, we were tasked with making a short retelling of a Disney story/movie, and my group got Cinderella. This sparked a desire in me to make more shorts. In High School I took a class called “Literature in Film.” This continued to fuel my love of film. During my senior year in High School, I had an opportunity to attend a career fair, and that’s where I saw a booth for The Motion Picture Institute. I attended their open house which was amazing, but I was still trying to decide my career path. I opted to take a gap semester after high school, traveling to Australia, New Zealand, Thailand and Japan. Upon returning home, I decided that film was the path I wanted to pursue and I applied to MPI. After graduating from MPI, and having made 3 short films, I can’t wait for where this journey continues.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has mostly been a smooth road, but the main obstacle in my life has been my anxiety. I struggled to participate in activities because of my anxiety, but I started to push myself in High School. One of my biggest challenges was choosing to go on a gap semester not knowing anyone in the group. The trip really helped me with my confidence, giving me coping skills that I’ll utilize for the rest of my life. My other struggle has been breaking into the film world. I’m hoping with graduating from MPI, and working on shorts, that I’ll find my niche.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At MPI I was introduced to the film industry. I’m open to working in editing, camera work, gaffing, but I’m really drawn to working in sound. I love music, and I love how the sound in movies adds to the story. I completed three shorts, and I’m working on more. I bought some sound gear and have been working with that. I am slowly getting into editing. I edited the films I created in middle school, but really learned the technical side of editing and editing software while attending MPI, I liked the control that editing gave me in creating film. I’m most proud of my time at MPI. I liked that I was able to learn and grow my skills where I can apply that in a career in the film industry.
What were you like growing up?
I was a quieter kid, thanks to my anxiety. I wasn’t involved in a lot of extracurriculars because I didn’t like having to perform in front of an audience. I’m an introvert, and enjoyed/enjoy activities with fewer people. I loved/love comic books, video games and watching movies. I was into Transformers; the Michael Bay movies were my favorites. I also really loved the Godzilla movies. Those movies are what really got me interested in film. I loved the cinematography and sound.
