Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Haze.
Hi Rob, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing stand up in college. I was alienated and didn’t fear embarrassment because I socially had nothing to lose. I performed at a poetry night and got my first laughs. It was addictive. It was one hundred percent self deprecating, but also I found something that could make people laugh. People on campus were calling me a comedian after that. It was the first thing I was good at. The first time I was a natural. After the first comedy show i went to I was like I want to be up there.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Stand Up is a tough road because there is no clear pipeline. In other things there are schools and classes and a clear pathway. In stand up there are steps that you don’t even see. Also, when you are starting out there is no filter or limit on who can participate. You are often interacting with people whose back is against the wall and this is the only thing they can do. No HR in comedy, no application process. It is a career that attracts all kinds of people. That is the beauty of it. Anyone can do it if they want to. Anyone can’t get on stage at a play. Anyone can’t get on a basketball court. Stand Up anyone can do for free. The audience knows that, and they treat you like that. As an adult learning a new skill is hard. Stand Up you have to learn how to do while you are learning how to navigate. Like all entertainment it is youth obsessed. Part of it is trying to achieve just for more opportunities to do it. Sometimes you have to make choices between being seen and doing more time. I always valued more time. I think the toughest part is getting out of the mindset of having “a job”. In entertainment there is no one job. You can and should try to work everyday like everyone else.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a stand up comedian, podcaster, and television writer. I have been doing both at the same time. I have seen many opportunities from stand up in the writing world. The writing world has afforded me the ability to do my passion. I don;t know why I podcast.
I’m most proud of my first special Frontin’ available on YouTube. It is a sound body of work that I put out myself. I got to tell a story that I don’t always feel like I can tell
What sets me apart is that I am speaking from my experience. No one else can be me. As long as I am giving my honest perspective I am good.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
The thing I like the most about our city is its passion for the arts. You are surrounded by billboards reminding you that the industry is here! So many people come here to work in the thing I love the most, entertainment.
The thing I like the least is that so many people are here. People line up for everything. Sometimes they are lining up for something that isn’t scarce.
