Conversations with Phillip Kim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Kim.

Hi Phillip, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a multidisciplinary designer specializing in art direction, branding, digital design, and storytelling.
I’ve always been deeply curious about the essence of things — about life, people, and the world we live in. At times, these big questions made me feel lost or small, but they always guided me back to what truly matters: people, society, and culture.

Questions like Why do we live? How should we live? What does it mean to live? have shaped me as a designer. Through design, I not only seek micro-level solutions but also aim to ask bigger questions — to inspire and be inspired by the world around me.

I was born in the state, raised in Korea, educated in the state, and have worked across New York, Los Angeles, Seoul, Korea, and San Francisco. Along this journey, I’ve built my identity by collaborating across industries and cultures.
Currently, I work in the technology space, focusing on communicating company vision and mission clearly through thoughtful design — ensuring technology serves humanity responsibly. I also continue to support small startups and culture-based brands that share this same purpose.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a smooth road in the bigger picture. Every path, mistake, shame, and moment of pain has shaped who I am today. Most of my struggles came from my own ego and enthusiasm, but openness and patience helped me overcome them. Now, I welcome any kind of challenge, and maybe even feel a little excited for them.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I consider myself a storyteller and a visionary someone who brings rational solutions to life through expressive visual language that both conveys and inspires. My ability to merge creativity with structure allows me to collaborate seamlessly with brands across various industries.

One of my favorite projects was branding Nike Korea. The goal was to craft an immersive identity that merged Korean culture with Nike’s global DNA. The process involved deep research, countless iterations, and embracing mistakes as part of discovery. Through that journey, I found subtle gestures and visual cues that not only expanded the brand system but also captured the emotional essence of Korean identity.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I’ve found my mentors not in person, but through history and books. I’ve been deeply inspired by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche, Max Ernst, and William Shakespeare. By observing how they think, communicate, and convey their ideas, I’ve been able to shape my own ideology and methodology as a designer and storyteller.
