Today we’d like to introduce you to Peineng Dai.
Peineng, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Peineng Dai, also known as PD David. I’m a songwriter/music producer currently based in LA. I was born in Beijing China, and my family and I moved to New York shortly after. At the age of six, my parents bought me a Casio keyboard, which marked the beginning of my music journey. Unlike some who were compelled to learn music, I enjoyed playing and practicing the keyboard, experimenting with its various sound choices as well as creating my own original music. I was professionally trained until the age of 14 when I took up and self-taught the electric piano over the years.
At 17, I moved to LA and got interested in electronic dance music, particularly inspired by Martin Garrix. Curiosity led me to discover that Martin Garrix uses FL Studio, which is a Digital Audio Workstation to produce music. This revelation ignited my passion for producing music. Initially drawn to the idea of becoming a DJ, my experiences at Berklee College of Music exposed me to collaborate with various artists and songwriters, which I found my passion shifted to becoming a hit music producer. Over time, as my musical inspirations developed, it solidified my decision to pursue a full-time career as a music producer.
After graduating in 2023, I moved to LA and immersed myself in the heart of the music industry, seeking opportunities and growth. I’ve had the privilege to meet some of the most wonderful and talented people. I’ve also been working with artists across different genres, becoming part of their teams, and witnessing their remarkable growth, which is truly a fulfilling experience.
And yes – That’s basically how my journey started. As I continue my journey, I look forward to further contributing to the vibrant music scene here in LA, working and meeting with more and more talented people!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The path to success in my music career would never be smooth. Through the inevitable ups and downs, I’ve realized that taking care of and balancing my mental health will go a long way, as good things always take time. I’ve always reminded myself to enjoy the process of crafting the art, or else the path has lost its meaning. It’s my passion that has pushed me through some of the toughest moments in my career.
Despite being a hard worker, I often found myself in situations where the effort I poured into projects didn’t quite align with what I was receiving. By experiencing the disappointments, I realized that a career in music is akin to an infinite rollercoaster ride. The key is to stay grounded at the highest peaks and maintain toughness during the lowest points. At the same time, I learned how important it is to work smarter instead of harder.
On another note, viewing music as a commodity and navigating the business side of my career has been a persistent struggle. Thankfully, I’ve been inspired by some great people along the way who have provided advice and insights and guided me toward a more entrepreneurial approach to my music career.
In my relatively short time here in LA, I’ve already gained a wealth of experiences and learning opportunities. I’m excited to face and learn from whatever challenge is to take in the future.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
