Conversations with Omandi Moore-Washington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Omandi Moore-Washington.

Hi Omandi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m from Philadelphia and for as long as I remember I have loved art and drawing, I would always be drawing as a kid, and I would always be watching anime on Toonami and the internet. So it was no surprise to anyone that I moved to California back in 2018-ish for college at the California College of the Arts up in Oakland and SF and majored in Animation. Before that I had brief stints at other colleges but I stayed at CCA the longest. When COVID hit I then moved down to LA and started taking online classes because I felt that something was missing from my courses at CCA. I then met a bunch of amazing people online who were working in Animation. I eventually connected with Ian Abando and he got me my first start on Invincible training as a storyboard revisionist, that job offer came in and I made the decision to withdraw from CCA.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve run into some roadblocks along the way but I’ve been trying to recover my mental health and get some clarity on what art means to me. I had a long stint in my teens where I stopped drawing and I think one of the things that I’m trying to internalize is that no matter what if you don’t stop and keep moving forward you can eventually end up in a place that you will be proud to have reached, even if it’s not what you fully envisioned for yourself.

I’ve had issues when I would lose confidence in myself as an artist but now I’m of the opinion that needing confidence to start is a trap because there’s always going to be something that humbles you. I’m learning to stumble through the process until the confidence in the piece develops at the end.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a storyboard revisionist in animation, we’re essentially firefighters in the story department we catch issues that the storyboard artists don’t necessarily have the time to fix because they are moving fast and have a lot of script pages to finish before the deadline. I’ve been on Invincible since Season 2. It’s been a wild ride and I’m so proud of the work that we did on the show with the time constraints.

It’s always been my goal to become a storyboard artist and then an episodic director. I didn’t know what that would entail before I worked in animation and now that I have the smallest glimpse at what it takes I know what I have to do to adjust my expectations and actions accordingly to achieve that ambitious goal!

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m really active on instagram, I love scrolling TikTok for animation music edits and im on Prokos youtube channel everyday watching videos.
