Today we’d like to introduce you to Naylon.
Hi Naylon, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska.
I began singing around the time I started talking, and growing up, singing and dancing was a daily occurrence. In school, I struggled tremendously with making friends and fitting in, but through music, I found an escape.
I always dreamed about living in a big city and it was something I yearned for desperately growing up. On my bedroom wall, a poster of the New York City skyline sat above my desk. Trinkets scattered my room of the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and envelopes addressed to musicians and actors around the world that I was drafting letters to.
I always felt destined to be in a big city. I loved performing and wanted to find more ways to be involved, which is how I discovered theater.
When I started high school, the six-second looping video app Vine had just begun taking off. Curious and nervous but feeling courageous, I created an alias, Maria Corinne, where I posted my first few covers on the app. To my complete surprise, my videos quickly started gaining traction and I began to grow a following.
I always had a voice in the back of my head telling me to write music, but it wasn’t until 2015 that I really began to explore songwriting. I released my first song, ‘Insanity,’ in 2017 as a SoundCloud exclusive with the help of a student club at my university. The process of releasing my first song gave me the fuel to pursue my career as an artist.
At this point, it had been a handful of years since I’d shared any videos online after Vine was shut down. I started recording videos again, singing some of my favorite songs in the car, and a few of my covers went viral. Simultaneously, I was working as a hostess and a waitress for a few years back home in Nebraska, trying to save enough money to take the plunge and move to Los Angeles. In September 2019, I drove cross-country to make Southern California my new home.
Since then, I’ve been working in studios with collaborators and alone at my keyboard, building my first project. So far, I’ve released my first three singles, “Man In The Moon,” “Wrong Person,” and “I Miss You.”
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the biggest obstacles I’ve had to overcome was getting out of my own way. I’ve spent so much time waiting for the perfect moment, song, scenario… the list goes on. Being in a unique environment like Los Angeles has its own set of challenges and perks, and everyone has an opinion. Learning to trust myself first has been the most rewarding.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At the moment, I’m focused on releasing the music that I’ve been working on for the past few years. My next single is a song that I first teased over five years ago called, “Pretend We’re Kids,” coming very soon.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success depends on what your goals are. In short, for me, that means reaching people who resonate with my music and message and having some fun along the way.
