Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Compton.
Hi Michaela, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in Las Vegas, NV surrounded by a 24/7 entertainment community, predominantly “cover songs”.. 2002, I moved to the South and discovered a large songwriting community in Mississippi and Tennessee. At this time, I was given the opportunity to create and host live television programming for Unity Broadcasting Network featuring local artists. The more songwriters I met, the more I fell in love with the art of original music. From there, I launched into radio broadcasting, exclusively featuring Indie Artists / Songwriters. Currently, I am the Radio Content Producer (DJ) of GROUND ZERO, KOCI 101.5 FM. GROUND ZERO sessions include two hours of original music, interviews, and stories behind the songs. In many cases, artists are invited to perform live during the radio session. KOCI 101.5 FM attracts 70k listeners within Orange County, CA, as well as listeners around the globe, streaming live online at www.kociradio.com. KOCI 101.5 FM is a non-profit, community-based radio station located in Newport Beach/Costa Mesa, CA. GROUND ZERO airs every Monday from 7:00-9:00 PM PT.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Staying committed has not been easy. Along the way, I have faced many obstacles, such as; becoming a widow at an early age; single parenting three young children, including my youngest who is living with Down syndrome; and moving back and forth across the country. Not to mention, radio broadcasting is not a lucrative career. However, I’m in it because I am passionate about giving songwriters a place to be heard.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
What sets me apart from other broadcasters is my background in the music industry. I am a vocalist, songwriter, and published author. My experience on the other side of the microphone and on stage compliments my ability to resource musicians and make them feel relaxed and welcomed in the studio.
My EP “Light of The City” released in 2018, available on all streaming sources, features Tony Hooper (Blues Counsel) and Emedin Rivera (Grammy Winning Percussionist). My book “Limey Limericks” released in 2022 and is available on Amazon Books (Paperback and Kindle).
What matters most to you?
What matters to me is the artists’ confidence in providing them with support and exposure in an environment exclusive to original music.
