Conversations with Lorice Dykes Jr

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lorice Dykes Jr.

Hi Lorice, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
During the pandemic I came home from college and my mom and older sister had the house filled with fruits and vegetables. They were juicing and making smoothies. One day my mom sad “son you should start making smoothies since we have all of this extra fruits and vegetables, it’s an easy way to get them in”. So I started making smoothies and thought about the neighborhood in Oakland, California that I grew up in not having access to healthy options like this so I came up with the idea to start my smoothie business Smoothies With Love with the goal of having a smoothie bar in my childhood neighborhood.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all, I didn’t have any knowledge on starting a smoothie business other than how to actually make smoothies. I had no huge savings to start. Everything to date has all been self funded making it hard at times because the business has not blown up to where I can use money from it to fund it. Once bills and rent have to be paid the business takes a back seat. Also, since starting the business officially back in 2023 I have changed jobs and lost one causing me to have to move temporarily and switch to all online services. Overall it’s been a tough journey but still worth it and I wouldn’t change it because I’ve learned a lot by jumping in head first and figuring things out in real time.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional saxophonist that has 20+ years of experience. I have performed with legendary musicians/artists that are Grammy award nominated and winners. I’ve released my own original music over the years and just love to create and perform. I started my smoothie business a few years ago to ultimately help people have a healthier alternative to sugar artificial drinks. I’m most proud of my ability to connect to people through my music, performances, and now through the delicious smoothies I make.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I would say it has to be my ability to sell myself. Nobody champions me more than I do. I make sure my work reflects the hype I give it. I pride myself in the quality so once someone has the chance to experience it they always want more.
