Today, we’d like to introduce you to KiUndréa Washington.
Hi KiUndréa, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
You can say it officially started in 9th grade. My mom & I would watch Black American films and music bio-pics, watch movies together, and get ice cream. It’s our thing. I was drawing comics and imitating Stan Lee, skateboarding, and playing sports at the time.
It wasn’t until I saw my friend Mario on his laptop (laptops at the Irving ISD school district in Dallas, Texas, provided every year) during one class and my friend Tony on the back of the school bus using virtual DJ in another instance. That’s when my interest in making music began. All the way throughout high school, my friends and I started throwing parties, and of course, I would DJ them.
We started brands that did quite well and competed with other brands in our school, creating competition, hype, and demand. I was getting my little local high school taste of fame. I graduated high school, went to Recording Arts school, and got many co-signs on SoundCloud while there. I’ve been in the music game and fashion industry ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s a 50/50 grind. (Pun intended). Half smooth, the other half is just obstacles. Challenges come with the territory or territories of the particular thing you’re doing.
If it’s music, and in a certain lane in particular, you get everything coming with that package. That applies to fashion, architecture, bespoke/artisan trades, etc. Do it from your heart, stay on top of your business, and you’ll breeze through those speed bumps like butter.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Everyone knows me for being a music producer who’s always innovating and making euphoric tracks to move your body! In recent years, I’ve been collaborating with brands like Nike, styling for Marc Jacobs, and My friends at Virgil Normal.
I still enjoy modeling, and my Skateboarding is getting better. The doors were opened for me, leading to opportunities to show my love for making uniquely designed 1-of-1 products & having them stamped by fellow peers at said institutions.
I’m really proud of my Air Force 1 Collaboration with Conscious Minds Studios. It didn’t win as the official 40th-anniversary shoe, but it is a legendary colorway referencing Dallas, Los Angeles, and my mom. Can you believe I lost by 20 votes ?! Haha.
But I did that knowing Virgil Abloh would be proud. I looked up to him. Along with the typical. Pharrell, Kanye, Marc Jacobs, etc. It’s becoming known that they have that same love and passion for creating dope stuff. That’s what’s setting me apart. My love for all art/design and my individual style in all lanes.
That is just my lane anyway, tbh.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
Yes, human interaction is important, staying disciplined is important, love is important, and family is important. Being grateful to be here every day is a key practice to being happy as well. That’s just me, at least.
