Today we’d like to introduce you to Kemmii.
Hi Kemmii, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been a performer as a young child, I enjoy making crowds feel amazed, like their time was well spent. As I entered middle school, I began making beats on Garageband, exploring the app, creating projects that eventually grew into my first EP “Love Me” available on my Soundcloud. In the pandemic, I spent the time and money unexpectedly given to me to work on bettering my craft. I bought Logic Pro X and a Macbook and other home studio items that are commonly known amongst musicians. I eventually released my first album, “Love Cycles” in November 2021 and received so much love from family, friends, and my school community around me. I was able to perform one of the singles off the album “More Than That” for my high school’s “Spring Dance Concert” as a post-intermission act. My peers performed with me in the show, with choreography created by myself and one of my mentors, Jalyn Diane. The live arrangement was also produced by myself and mixed by producer SKA. Following the performance, I released an EP titled “Heels” which dropped on my birthday August 31! The project included various genres: including Soul, Pop, Dancehall and ending with Funk. Later in November, on the one-year anniversary of “Love Cycles” I released the deluxe version. I included 8 more tracks to the track-list totaling an 18-track RnB album produced by myself and SKA. Recently on Valentine’s Day, I re-released “I’m In Love” (a single from my first album, “Love Cycles” with a new master and new vocals. Currently, I’m working on the release of my next singles and the album following behind it, which is expected to be released in April 2024. I’ve been experimenting with new sounds and mixing them with nostalgic 2000’s Rnb/Pop vibes.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but with struggle comes blessings and new lessons on the other side. Recently I finished my first year of college. I attended the State University of New York at Fredonia located in Western New York. I studied Music Industry and enjoyed my time learning about how the current Music Industry functions. I’ve gained insight on future decisions that may arise and received many golden nuggets by my professors, especially Edward Croft. While I was able to work on my craft in my room, the community around me and its location did not meet my expectations. My ability to adapt to the new environment from being a New York City kid felt impossible. I realized my drive and motivation had become dull. To add, the distance from my hometown prevented multiple opportunities to happen for me in New York City. I eventually decided to transfer back to a New York City college in my spring semester. So far, the switch has been rough but God has been blessing me along the way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a vocalist, producer, songwriter, performer, and beginner engineer currently. I’m known mostly for my charismatic personality which is shown most in my performances. I specialize in vocal ability and performing, I love making crowds feel content! I’ve noticed one of my common compliments after a set is how great my stage presence is. During performance sets, I love interacting with the crowd and making them a part of the music. I am truly grateful knowing that my audiences enjoy my charisma.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t necessarily believe in luck. Most of the opportunities given to me were attained by exhibiting my drive in a professional manner and self-advocation. I also stay “prayed up” and allow the will of God to direct me. Even through COVID, which seemed like bad luck for the world, was packed with blessings for me. I got my studio equipment and worked on my craft for the two years that the world was isolated. When you put the work in, the fruit of your labor will never amaze you.
