Conversations with Katya Rodriguez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katya Rodriguez.

Hi Katya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Photography has been part of my life since the 10th grade, when I first picked up a camera in high school. Back then, everything was film. There were no instant previews, no endless digital shots just patience, creativity, and the magic of the darkroom. I still remember the excitement of watching an image slowly appear on photo paper while it soaked in the developer tray under the dim red lights. It felt like pure magic. Photography started as something fun, a creative escape during school, never imagining that it would one day become such an important part of my life.

What began as a class project turned into a passion that kept growing year after year. Photography taught me how to see the world differently to notice light, emotion, details, and moments that most people might overlook. It gave me a way to tell stories without saying a word.

The most beautiful part of photography is that it never feels like a job to me. Every session is different, every story is unique, and every person I meet brings something special into my life. Over the years, I’ve met so many incredible people who first came to me as clients but eventually became like family. Some hired me for their engagement photos, then their wedding, and later invited me back to photograph their newborn babies and their child’s first birthday. Being trusted to capture those milestones is one of the coolest and most meaningful experiences I could ever ask for. It’s like being part of their story.

Photography has opened doors I never imagined possible. I’ve had the opportunity to photograph headshots and corporate events for major companies like Cox Communications in South County. I’ve also photographed fashion shows and worked in spaces that once felt like a distant dream.

Along the way, my work has even been published in well-known magazines such as Cosmopolitan and Vogue, along with several others. One of the most special moments in my journey happened on September 27, 2021, when my work was first published. I had photographed my friend Heather Sprague, the CEO of Sage Dane, and that photoshoot became my very first publication. Seeing my work in print for the first time was surreal it was one of those moments where everything felt worth it.

Now, being invited to share my photography and talk about my journey feels incredibly meaningful. Looking back, I realize photography didn’t just become a career it changed my life. It gave me opportunities I never expected. It allowed me to meet amazing people, build lifelong connections, and travel into worlds I never imagined being part of.

One of the most unexpected turns in my journey was finding myself walking the runway in fashion shows in Los Angeles. Photography brought me into that world, something I had never even thought about before picking up a camera.

From a high school darkroom to fashion shows, publications, and lifelong friendships, photography has taken me on a journey I could have never planned. And the most beautiful part is that the journey is still continuing one photo, one story, and one incredible moment at a time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a completely smooth road. Like many photographers, my journey has come with challenges that have helped shape who I am today.

When I first started in high school shooting film and working in the darkroom, everything felt exciting but also required patience and practice. Film photography teaches you quickly that every frame matters. You couldn’t instantly see the results, so mistakes became some of the greatest teachers. Those early experiences taught me to slow down, pay attention to light, and truly understand the craft.

As photography grew from a passion into something more professional, another challenge was learning how to balance creativity with the business side of things. Many people see the final photos, but they don’t always see the hours behind the scenes—sorting through thousands of images, editing late at night, organizing galleries, and making sure every client receives something beautiful and meaningful.

Another situation photographers sometimes face is when clients ask for discounts. I’m someone who genuinely cares about people, so there have been times when I’ve offered a lower price because I wanted to help or make things work for them. Occasionally, when I arrive at the venue, I see that the event is quite elaborate and beautifully put together, which can be a little surprising. Even so, I always remind myself that every client’s story is important, and I’m grateful to still be there capturing their memories. Over time, I’ve learned the importance of valuing the work, time, and heart that goes into photography while still approaching people with kindness and understanding.

There have also been moments of self-doubt, long days, and the pressure.

So no, the road hasn’t always been easy but every lesson has helped me grow. Photography changed my life, and even with the challenges, it has never truly felt like work. It feels like a passion that allows me to connect with people and preserve moments that will live on for generations.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a photographer who specializes in capturing people at their most confident, expressive, and authentic. Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to photograph many different moments in people’s lives, but one of my true specialties is fashion shows. I love the energy, creativity, and fast-paced environment of fashion photography being able to capture movement, style, and personality in a single frame is something that truly excites me.

One of the proudest moments in my career was being published on the front page of Cosmopolitan. Seeing my work recognized on such a well-known platform was incredibly rewarding and a reminder of how far my photography journey has come.

What really sets me apart from other photographers, though, is my approach to working with people. I naturally connect with different personalities and adjust my energy to make each person feel comfortable and understood. I’m a Libra, so balance and reading people’s energy comes very naturally to me. Whether I’m photographing men or women, I’m able to quickly sense what someone needs to feel confident in front of the camera.

Many of my clients tell me that what makes their experience special is how much fun they have during the shoot. I love helping people step out of their comfort zone in a way that feels natural and empowering. By creating a relaxed and positive atmosphere, people start to feel confident, beautiful, and truly themselves and that’s when the best photographs happen.

What I’m most proud of is not only the recognition my work has received, but the way photography allows me to connect with people. Seeing someone light up when they see their photos and realize how amazing they look is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. For me, photography isn’t just about taking pictures it’s about creating an experience where people feel confident, celebrated, and unforgettable. ✨

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Photography makes me happy because it allows me to connect with people and capture moments that will never happen the same way again. I love seeing someone start a photoshoot feeling a little nervous, and by the end they’re confident, laughing, and truly enjoying the moment.

One of the most rewarding parts is when people see their photos and realize how amazing they look. Knowing I helped someone feel confident and beautiful is incredibly fulfilling.

Photography also brings me joy because of the relationships it creates. Many clients who started as strangers have become friends, and I’ve been able to capture so many important chapters of their lives. For me, photography doesn’t feel like work it feels like a passion that allows me to create memories that last forever.
