Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Fortin

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey from Lima to Huntington Beach has been filled with more love, risk, and passion than I could have ever imagined. Every step I’ve taken has been driven by resilience and ambition, but more than anything, by the deep love I have for my children, Maddox and Brooklyn, who are the center of my world.

Growing up in Lima, I was captivated by the magic of fashion. I’d reenact scenes from my favorite movies, embodying the emotions of the characters. Lima’s vibrant colors and dynamic energy became a part of who I am, fueling my desire to share that spark on a global stage. That dream stayed with me as I matured and developed my craft.

I started as a familiar face in Lima’s fashion scene, drawn to the lights, the artistry, and the power of connecting with others through a single photograph. Yet, I knew my ambitions stretched beyond the familiar. When the opportunity to model in Los Angeles presented itself, I took a leap of faith, leaving behind everything I knew. It was a bittersweet move, but one filled with hope and the promise of a better future for me and my children.

California came with its own set of challenges, but Huntington Beach soon became a sanctuary for us, a place where we could find moments of peace by the ocean. It was here that I truly embraced my modeling career. I sought out opportunities, honing my skills, and showcasing my unique style, culminating in an exhilarating experience walking the runway at Los Angeles Fashion Week. The rush of being part of such a prestigious show reaffirmed my belief that I was on the right path.

Every project and photoshoot has been a reminder of why I embarked on this journey. I want Maddox and Brooklyn to see that no dream is too big, that with enough passion and dedication, anything is achievable. Today, I am more than just a model; I am a storyteller and a dreamer, carrying with me the vibrant roots of Lima and the love that keeps me grounded. This journey is only just beginning, and I look forward to whatever comes next, knowing that my children and dreams are right there with me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey hasn’t been entirely smooth; like many in the modeling and fashion industry, I’ve faced my share of obstacles and challenges.

One of the biggest hurdles was the initial transition from Lima to Los Angeles. Leaving behind my family, friends, and the only life I had ever known was both exhilarating and daunting. It was difficult to establish myself in a competitive environment where many others were vying for the same opportunities. The uncertainty and self-doubt often crept in, making me question if I made the right choice.

Additionally, breaking into the fashion scene required persistence and resilience. Early on, I faced rejection and setbacks, which can be disheartening. Each “no” felt personal, but I learned to view them as stepping stones rather than roadblocks. I focused on honing my skills, building my portfolio, and networking with others in the industry to create opportunities for myself.

Financial struggles also played a role, especially during the early stages of my career. Pursuing modeling often requires investing in photoshoots, networking events, and casting calls, which can add up quickly. I had to be strategic about my budget while balancing my responsibilities as a mother.

Despite these challenges, each struggle has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience, determination, and the importance of believing in myself. They’ve shaped me into the person I am today, fueling my passion and commitment to my dreams. Now, I approach each obstacle with a mindset focused on growth and the understanding that every challenge brings me one step closer to my goals.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?

I’m known for my ability to bring energy and authenticity to my shoots, drawing on my vibrant background and unique perspective as a Latina model.

What I’m most proud of is my journey and the growth I’ve experienced along the way. Participating in events like Los Angeles Fashion Week has been a significant milestone, allowing me to share the runway with other talented models and connect with industry professionals. Each project I undertake is an opportunity to showcase my skills and passion for fashion, and I strive to make an impact with every image I create.

What sets me apart from others is my deep-rooted connection to my cultural heritage, which influences my style and approach to modeling. I embrace the vibrant energy of Lima while incorporating contemporary trends to create a unique aesthetic. My dedication to my craft, combined with my ambition to break barriers in the industry, allows me to connect with a diverse audience.

Additionally, my journey as a mother adds another layer to my work. It inspires me to push boundaries and be a role model for others, showing that it’s possible to pursue dreams while balancing family life. This perspective not only shapes my approach to modeling but also resonates with my audience, creating a relatable and authentic connection.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID-19 crisis brought about significant challenges, but it also taught me invaluable lessons that have shaped my approach to both my career and personal life.

Adaptability became key during this time. The pandemic forced many of us to rethink our strategies and adapt to a rapidly changing environment. I learned to be flexible and open to new opportunities, whether that meant exploring virtual collaborations, honing my skills through online classes, or finding innovative ways to connect with my audience.

The value of connection became more apparent than ever. During lockdowns and social distancing, I realized how essential human interaction is, even in a digital world. Engaging with my audience through social media and virtual events became crucial. I focused on building authentic relationships and sharing my journey, which helped strengthen my community.

Prioritizing mental health also emerged as a critical lesson. The uncertainty of the pandemic highlighted the importance of well-being. I learned to take care of myself and find balance amid chaos, whether through mindfulness practices, exercise, or simply taking time to recharge. This focus on mental health has allowed me to approach my work with renewed energy and positivity.

Resilience and perseverance became central themes during this period. The crisis tested my strength and reminded me that setbacks are a part of any journey. I learned to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and to keep pushing forward despite obstacles. This mindset has empowered me to stay committed to my goals and dreams.

Lastly, creativity and innovation flourished as I adapted to the situation. With in-person events and shoots on hold, I discovered new ways to express myself creatively. I experimented with self-portraiture and collaborated with others remotely, opening fresh avenues for artistic expression. This experience encouraged me to think outside the box and continue innovating in my work.

Overall, the lessons learned during the COVID-19 crisis have deepened my understanding of the importance of adaptability, connection, and resilience. These insights will continue to guide me as I navigate my journey in the modeling and fashion industry, helping me emerge stronger and more focused on my goals.
