Conversations with Josh Crews

Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Crews.

Hi Josh, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Digital and Motion Graphics Artist currently creating immersive content for The Sphere in Las Vegas. My work with The Sphere began over a year before its opening, when I was brought on as a freelance artist to help develop its visual library. Since then, I’ve joined the team full-time, continuing to craft visuals for one of the most innovative canvases in the world.

Now in my 20th year in the industry, my path began in Georgia—where I graduated from UGA, interned in Atlanta, and also landed my first jobs in media there. In 2005, I moved to New York City, introducing myself to studios the old-school way: by personal visiting offices and handing out DVDs of my demo reel. I’ve now worked for studios all over the world , as well as for my own company, 10 Fold Inc.

The first chapter of my career was rooted in TV and film, working both on set and in post. But after a few relocations, I settled in Los Angeles in 2010, where my focus shifted toward live event visuals and experiential content. I had the good fortune of working with leading studios just as projection mapping and LED technologies were revolutionizing the live entertainment space.

That evolution has taken me from screens to stadiums to one of the most advanced visual platforms ever built.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was a real grind to get started. It was a challenge to stay booked consistently enough to pay bills. I took any job I could to move in the right direction, and picked up side gigs to keep money coming in—screen printing, catering, driving pedicabs, and more. But over time, the hard work paid off, and I eventually built a reliable rotation of companies that would hire me consistently.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
-Motion Graphics/Animation/Visual Effects/Digital Art

-Most proud of The Sphere. Also getting to projection map the SNL stage, as well as the American Idol Stage. Also really fond of my moments of making videos with Linkin Park and Aerosmith. And also getting to do a projection show on 2.5 mile wide ancient city in Saudi Arabia.

-Other notable clients and projects include: •Apple •Google •Netflix •Nike •Star Wars •Game of Thrones •SNL •NBA •NFL

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Honestly I’d like to stay right where I”m at. This is first time in my 20 year career that I’ve been a full-time staff employee. I really enjoy the level that we work at, and we’re going to keep pushing it.
