Conversations with Jon Harrison Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jon Harrison Taylor

Hi Jon Harrison, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started playing music at a young age following in my father’s footsteps. He was a legendary blues singer named Johnnie Taylor who had a 50-plus year career, including several hit songs on the Billboard R&B a number one Pop Billboard song in the country called “Disco Lady”. Fun fact, Dad’s song sold so many copies back then, 2 million, that it became the first-ever platinum song in history. Billboard had to invent a new level!

My parents encouraged my interest in music getting me guitar lessons when I was 13. I fronted bands singing and playing guitar in high school and later during college in Austin, TX. I eventually moved to LA and began my career as a studio and touring guitarist working with artists on major labels, including Robin Thicke. I was fortunate to play shows worldwide and appear on TV shows like Ellen and Soul Train, a place my father played many times before. All the while I was writing and recording my original music as a singer, songwriter, and producer. I’ve released several albums and singles as a solo artist including eight new songs in 2024. My genre is soul pop, a mix old school soul and R&B infused with crowd-pleasing pop song vibes.

I’m looking forward to releasing even more music before the year’s end and producing more music for other artists.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Is there a smooth road in the music industry? The struggles are real and many: there’s no job security, egomaniacs run rampant, your mind and body health can be affected by constant travel, late nights, no sleep, and very, very good times, and your relationships can suffer. It can be difficult to be fulfilled artistically in a business driven by the next hot thing, decisions dictated to you by business people, and the random nature of the entertainment business. Whether it was performing on a TV show that was chaos behind the scenes, or simply getting the entire band on a plane in time, there were many times when I wondered how anything ever got done. Then there’s the learning curve. The more things change the more you have to adapt to technology, social media, whatever. It can be challenging to keep up.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a singer, songwriter, and producer. I specialize in writing, producing, and performing my soul-pop music. I’m most proud of the fact that after all these years, I still do what I love the most, which is music. What sets me apart is that, like everyone else, I am singular and unique. My taste, my dislikes, my thoughts, and my expressions are mine alone.

Any big plans?
I am releasing a slew of new music this fall and playing more shows. I’m excited about the new catalog of soul-pop music and working my way back from solo acoustic shows to performing with a full band.
