Conversations with Johara Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johara Richardson.

Hi Johara, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
As a child, my mother involved me in a lot of performance arts in church, including choir, praise dancing, poetry and a few plays. My interest in music and other forms of art and creation was primarily because of her. And I carried that love with me through elementary school all the way to where I’m at now. I’ve performed with an array of theater ensembles, community choirs, music groups, and big time acts. I was motivated to take my craft serious because of a mentor of mine, Jonathan Buffong, who I respectfully call Jon Blaze. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a few standout people along my journey, who have assisted in honing my craft. I was further motivated to continue my craft because of my friend, Michael “Halla” Williams, who is also a vanguard, in my opinion. Since meeting him in 2013, I’ve been involved with his entertainment group of creatives, TuffCrowd Entertainment, who I’ve worked in over 25 theater plays with.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey to this point has not been easy, experiencing homelessness, failed music ventures, artistic differences, and incarceration. Before I met Halla, I was considering quitting music and arts altogether. I’ve had a lot of encouragement and motivation from friends and family to keep going along the way!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
First, I am an artist by trade. My artistry includes singing, musicianship, acting, production, choreography, and stepping. I specialize in singing, it’s my first love. I’m what my group mates consider a “Swiss army knife” because I’m utilized for just about anything that’s needed in TuffCrowd’s productions. What sets me apart from other acts is my work ethic, performance and professionalism. Not to mention I have a distinct voice that may be reminiscent of 90s R&B.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love that this city gives just about anyone hope that they’ll achieve their dreams. So much talent has been born here, discovered here, or traveled here. Los Angeles has opportunity everywhere in its borders, and there are so many people that believe they can seize their opportunity here. In the same breath, that’s also the same reason I like about the city the least. It’s fast paced and there are many people that are opportunistic people here in a negative way as well.
