Conversations with Jahi Trotter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jahi Trotter.

Hi Jahi , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been a filmmaker since 2013, driven by a deep curiosity about people, storytelling, and the human experience. I earned my B.S. in Social Science in 2014, and later went on to receive my MFA in Film and Television from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2022.

Acting, however, came into my life in a much more personal and unexpected way. I’m an only child, and in August 2019, my father passed away suddenly—just a year after my parents divorced following 42 years of marriage. Not long after, I enrolled in an acting class at SCAD, and a professor saw something in me and pushed me to pursue it seriously.

Then in 2021, my mother passed away from breast cancer, just a year and a half after my father. During that time, acting became more than just a craft for me. It became a lifeline. It gave me a way to process grief, to express what I couldn’t put into words, and ultimately, to keep going. In many ways, acting saved my life.

Today, I’m continuing to build my path as a filmmaker, actor, and educator. I create my own films, collaborate with others, and teach the next generation of storytellers—all while continuing to grow as an artist. For me, storytelling isn’t just a career, it’s a purpose. It’s how I connect, heal, and contribute something meaningful to the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Dealing with my parents death has been the biggest struggle for me. Being an only child is tough when you lose both parents. I have been through a lot, but my goal is to continue their legacy. I’ve also faced the challenges of navigating the entertainment industry without shortcuts. Auditioning consistently, creating my own projects when opportunities didn’t come, and pushing forward even during seasons of doubt. Those struggles strengthened my resilience. They taught me discipline, emotional depth, and gratitude.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a filmmaker, actor, cosplayer, and educator who specializes in character-driven storytelling, often blending drama, action, and grounded realism. I’m especially drawn to stories that explore human behavior, resilience, and transformation.

I’m known for creating my own work, writing, producing, and starring in independent films that have screened at festivals across the U.S. and internationally. I’m also proud of my work as a teacher, helping young creatives find their voice through filmmaking and performance.

At the core of everything I do is a commitment to authenticity and telling stories that feel real, personal, and impactful.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think it’s just been my effort to keep going. Keep striving. Don’t get me wrong, I have had my mental breakdowns, frustration, anger, and pain, but I am grateful for the support system I have. Mainly my girlfriend and my friends.
