Conversations with Ivan Marques

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ivan Marques.

Hi Ivan, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Demo Tape is a band created in 2022, a few months after the worst events of COVID pandemic. We felt so small in the world when we realized that life, friendships, families and everything else could end because of a disease. So, we decided to do what we like to do with people who we love. I know guitarrist Henrique Ferreira since our childhood. We know drummer Alan Abreu and bassist Fabio Sanches since high school. I lost some friends during the pandemic and stop doing a lot of things I love as playing soccer, diving, to go to beach, to enjoy gigs, etc. Music is something we love. But I have some angry inside me too. I hated how some people and politicians acted during the pandemic. A lot of people lost their lives because politicians did not believed in how dangerous the situation was. They told people to not take care of themselves, they told them to take ineffective medicine. So, I have to scream the angry and the love I felt. After these years, I still think I have a message to spread, just like my bandmates. Demo Tape is our way to both spread love and hate.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s never been easy. We live in a city that is not made to those who like rock. There is no money, there is no places to play, only a few guys who struggle everyday to keep a place open. Those places are for an audience of 200 hundred people. And we play, we make posts on social media, we send press releases to journalists, we photograph. It’s always a “do it yourself” way.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Demo Tape plays rock. We are known for our energy on stage. We are proud of our music, everyday! We practice, we study, we look for places to play, we spend our time looking for a chance to show our music to people!

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Artists like Metallica, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Chevelle, Faith no More, Incubus, Black Sabbath, Sepultura, Foo Fighters are always an inspiration.
