India Traylor

Hi India, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My journey as a beautician began at an early age, fueled by a love for hair that started in childhood. Despite not initially considering it as a career, I was captivated by the artistry of hairstyling, influenced by watching my stepmother-style clients in our basement and then making all of my friends get their hair done by me whenever they stayed the night. As a young adult, I pursued other endeavors, including working at Houston’s in Manhattan Beach, where, for the first time, I was content and actually making good money. It wasn’t until 2017 I met Courtney, the owner of Pretty Strands, and started assisting her that my passion for hairstyling truly blossomed. Encouraged by her to pursue my own path in the industry, I took a leap of faith after discovering I was pregnant with my first child. Then, I left my job at Houston’s to focus on building my career as a hairstylist. Now in my sixth year in the industry, I am grateful for the opportunities and success I’ve achieved, attributing my journey to a natural talent, faith, and dedication to my craft, which allows me to care for my family while doing what I love and impacting others.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
While pursuing my passion for entrepreneurship in the hair industry, I faced numerous challenges that sometimes made me feel inadequate. The journey was far from easy, with moments of uncertainty about meeting financial obligations. The dilemma of choosing between a stable job with a guaranteed income or persisting in building my craft was a constant struggle. The competitiveness of LA’s hair industry added another layer of difficulty, causing moment of discouragement and self-doubt in a field where everyone possesses hair styling skills. It took me a considerable amount of time to reach the point where I am today, yet I humbly acknowledge that I have not reached the pinnacle of success.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As a versatile stylist, I offer a wide range of services, including press and curl, weaves, ponytails, and braids. However, I prefer to identify myself as a hair care specialist, placing a strong emphasis on promoting and maintaining healthy hair. What sets me apart from others in the industry is the meticulous attention I dedicate to ensuring the health and well-being of my client’s hair. I am currently shifting my career focus toward only providing specialized hair care treatments and styling. I have been diligently studying various systems and tools and am excited to introduce custom conditioning treatments, high-frequency treatments, and herbal tea rinses to enhance the hair care experience of my clients to spa-grade. My latest endeavor involves creating a unique hair tea system in collaboration with my business partners. This system, aimed at improving internal health and promoting hair growth, has yielded remarkable results and stands as a significant achievement in my career. Being able to contribute to the health and well-being of others through my work is a fulfilling experience that I believe is only God’s work and assures me that I am walking in alignment.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I wouldn’t say there is anything particular. I just get inspired by viewing different stylist on Instagram and TikTok on a daily. That has become the main resource for style inspiration, product knowledge, and services.
