Conversations with Haley Margo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haley Margo.

Hi Haley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m convinced I’ve been a pop girl since birth. J-14 and TigerBeat were my morning paper. Like most girls my age, the Cheetah Girls and Hannah Montana really shaped my music taste (and fashion sense). I started songwriting at a pretty young age, mostly pulling inspo from movies or tv shows or books I was reading. I mainly did this since I had yet to have any of the experiences I actually wanted to write about. It’s safe to say we’ve definitelyyyy got a lot to work with now. My dad was in a rock band in Michigan the 90s and always played gigs locally when I was growing up, so my house was always super musical, and after what seemed like FOREVER, my parents surprised me with my first guitar at 12 for my birthday! When I gained more autonomy I went to as many concerts as I could afford as a teenager. I’ve always loved the energy of a room where everyone is connecting over one thing. Some of my best memories are tied to live music, it’s the most magical thing in the world. Once I had the resources, I started recording music with my sisters’ producer friend in Michigan, and then moved to California in 2023 to pursue music full-time! Since moving, I’ve recorded and released a few songs and am finally starting to find my sound and work with people who see me.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’ve often struggled with my collaborators seeing my exact vision. When working with different male producers especially, there’s been moments I’ve felt my art being twisted into something I didn’t want. I’ve had to learn to speak up and not just let others take over. I’ve always collaborated well with feminine energy. It’s always been my dream to find an all queer team to work with, front to back so, hit me up if you’re out there LA divas.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a songwriter first and foremost, but a pop/r&b girl through and through. I’ve always been more introverted and not the best at expressing my thoughts and emotions, so writings always been my saving grace for understanding myself. Sometimes I swear I have a download from the universe and am able to write exactly what I need to hear. There’s no better feeling than connection, so being able to write from experience (or not) and have others resonate and relate to your words is really empowering. What sets me apart, truly, is my Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve, and Talent.

How do you define success?
Besides the money and the attention, real success is the feeling of creating something I’m proud of that resonates and brings other people together. All we want as humans is to understand each other and to feel, and that’s what I hope my music does to people.
