Conversations with Fernando Ferrer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fernando Ferrer.

Hi Fernando, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began this journey of photography about a year ago. I began by merely taking pictures of what was around me. I took pictures of my environment; such as parks, streets, flowers, animals, and my family members. I did this with the idea of enjoying what I liked in my surrounding and capturing in a photograph. In doing this, I realized that I enjoyed it very much and wanted to learn new techniques about how to improve my photography skills. I then began learning on my own by watching YouTube videos about professional photographers. I learned about different styles, techniques, forms, lighting, and how to make the most of my camera. I tried applying what I learned through the number of different you tubers into my photography. When I applied what I was learning, I began to grow more curious about furthering my skills and enrolled in photography classes at a college. Through my coursework, I have completed projects about commercial photography including completing mood boards, setting up stages for production, and setting up the lighting. I have also done portraits with individuals and families. Furthermore, I have experience in developing films. So far, I am taking intermediate-level classes. I am learning so much about photography and loving it more and more as time goes by. Through my professional preparation, I have gotten the opportunity to obtain some income by doing photography at events like weddings, quinceaneras, and cultural events. I have also done graduation shoots.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. One of the difficulties I have faced is financial difficulties in obtaining equipment. If you want a high-quality image, you have to invest in great equipment such as lights, strobes, lenses, stands, backgrounds, and space at times. Another struggle I have is getting my name and working out in the public. There is much competition and especially for a person who is starting a business in photography. Another difficulty is that there are people who are not willing to pay my work’s worth. Some people do not understand the art in photography and view it as something simple that anybody can do. Being a photographer does not only entail taking a picture with a camera. It’s much more than that. It takes knowledge of pre, pro, and post-production, creativity, patience, understanding of techniques, and vision to assemble everything together.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer. I specialize in cultural photography. I am most proud of capturing emotions of Aztec dancers through their art. What sets me apart from others is my style of post-production of images. I make images more vivid with color and emotion. I also set myself apart from others by capturing Aztec dancers in their most natural movements. I capture them in thought and connection to their roots. I am an Aztec dancer myself and I understand the way in which dancers dance and feel.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my photography journey is that a photograph is not just an object. A photograph is something that captures the essence of a moment in a person’s life or in the world. By taking photographs, a photographer documents history. Photography allows people to relive memories of love, connection, prayer, affection, intimacy, and attachment.
