Today we’d like to introduce you to DryBoy.
Hi DryBoy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My first venture into music wasn’t through singing or rapping into a microphone, but instead dancing. After rehearsals, we used to freestyle over beats via YouTube or SoundCloud. I danced up until my senior year of high school and eventually started to take the beats I would freestyle over into my friends at home studio where I began to write and released my first song ever “Lost”. While my first song was gaining traction on Sound Cloud I started to venture out into the city of Chicago with friends after school and pass out business cards I made in my art class that had QR codes to my music. I was looking to perform at anything I could get my hands onto and eventually started to perform at the Forge in Joliet and other venues in west Chicago.
The first show I ever did, I was scammed of $300 dollars to open for a bigger artist who never came but it was during this show in 2018 I met some people who helped me kickstart my career and before I knew it I was opening up for artists such as Lil Durk, YBN Nahmir, G Herbo and Calboy. It was also during this time I started to take my time with my writing and the instruments selected for certain tracks which gave birth to my biggest song “Summer Nights”. Shortly after a good friend at worldstar named Gio helped us get two of our songs on the channel which helped us grow tremendously, ever since then it’s been up.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road of success in music is a bumpy one. I used to be treated very poorly at a ton of shows and a lot of people thought my music was too sad or not upbeat enough for their taste or support. Sometimes my set times would be cut short and I was constantly in my head about my music and what others thought. I eventually started letting the art speak for itself and stopped caring about what others thought. During the ride, there were Rollout plans that worked well for certain releases but didn’t work well for others. There were constant days on the drawing board trying to put together plans. Sometimes these plans didn’t work out the way we thought they would and would result in less fans interacting with the new song etc, which can put a strain on your mental and allow doubt to fill your head.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Pop rock / Alternative hip hop artist. I combine different genres together to form the art that is my music. I am most proud of my growth and sound. I feel it is very unique in this world of music. It all starts with my at-home studio where me and my friends gather and create. We start out on Ableton and bring out various instruments and choose which we use depending on the mood of what was written. I say what sets me apart from others is my vulnerability in my music. I don’t leave anything out, and what’s on my mind comes out in my art.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I have nothing but love for the city of Los Angeles. As soon as I came out here two years ago, I was surrounded by talent in every direction. I love how open this city is to people of the arts. I believe this city shines with its people and the amount of help in music I have gotten out here shows that to me. I am constantly pushing myself to be the best I can and it helps when everyone in the city you are in is extremely talented, and that’s the case with Los Angeles. I believe I found my team here!
