Conversations with Diana Alvort

Today we’d like to introduce you to Diana Alvort.

Diana Alvort

Hi Diana, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hola! I am Diana Alvort, a proud Mexican-Spaniard-American singer, actress and songwriter passionate about cultural diversity and human connection through music, acting and stories.
I love blending and creating genres, eras and languages for a true universal experience.

Music and acting have always been my thing. I remember as a kid I used to suddenly fake faint to test my acting skills at our home in Torreón, México.
Sometimes I entertained my younger cousins by talking and singing as “Barney the Dinosaur” and I “confessed” to them I was the one on TV…yes cousins, sorry to break this to you, I am not really Barney, but hey we had fun!

Jokes aside, I really loved acting, dancing and singing my heart out, holding deodorants and spoons as my mic and writing songs in Spanglish. I knew I wanted to become an artist.

When my parents split, we moved to Guadalajara to live with my mom and relatives.
My mom had been struggling for years to make ends meet, so to get us out of that situation, I ended up studying Finance, thanks to a scholarship, and later worked as a Finance Manager.

Luckily, while studying I spotted an opportunity to sing in wedding bands, which taught me a lot, then I performed on jazz trios, EDM collabs, theater, etc and my love for world music and stories developed even more.

Through many castings, courses and gigs I’ve gotten to collaborate with amazing artists, performing in arenas and TV shows, among them “The Voice Mexico”, where I got a standing ovation singing “La Vie en Rose” and hugged my crush Ricky-Mi Amor-Martin! Oh I even painted him in school but you can’t really say it’s him, oil painting is tough.

Next, I moved to Austin, Texas where we formed an all-girl band, “Diana & The Amazons” which was exciting for a while, and then from another band I met a friend who explained me how Blockchain technology could help the world in many ways, I found that so inspiring I composed “Blockchain for the People” and I got to sing it at the Blockchain Awards in Canada!

Now I am based in Los Angeles and I am honored and grateful for “The Sovereign”, my first lead role in a dramedy feature! It got the Audience Award at LA IFS Fest and is collecting several awards around the globe. I have also been studying acting and music for years, online and in person and I have been working on other films and playing music around LA.

Next step is to produce captivating video clips and promote my original songs, which are a fusion of languages and genres, such as flamenco-rock, reggae-soul, power pop, etc mixing French, Spanish and English so far, about topics of love, empowerment, technology, etc.

My other big goal for 2024 is to write my own feature film script and then to produce it and star in it!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh no, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Besides the economic struggles, especially in my teens, I had to beg for permission to go castings and gigs, then facing uncertainty and rejection at auditions, and after getting some projects, I have dealt with problems such as delays, arguments for payments, jealousy, abuse of power, creative differences and the occasional sexual harassment and scam attempts.

Another thing is the time constraints: Acting and music are 2 demanding careers on their own, and though it’s magical how they enrich each other, it is indeed a challenge to pursue both.

Plus moving to the USA has been a learning process, missing my family, my country and working with the language and cultural barrier despite speaking English.

Those barriers are precisely what I dream to erase through music and acting, any division that comes from not knowing or not appreciating the beauty of our different cultures and our many similarities and connections. I feel art builds universal bridges among us if we are open to it.

But despite all of this, I am very happy and grateful for being here in LA pursuing my calling with wonderful humans I’ve met!
It seemed impossible, but here I am. Don’t let anyone discourage you from what you love the most! I hope I can inspire you to go for it the same way others have shown me it’s possible.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I love blending time and cultural barriers to connect and generate new exciting music and characters, for example, I made a song that can be described as a French-Spanish conversation in modern swing style, I have another flamenco rock tune, I made a video mixing the Japanese and Spanish intro of Sailor Moon etc.

In terms of acting and stories, this means I love playing around with comedy and drama tones, complex characters with mixed backgrounds and/or languages, motivations, plot twists and surprises.

In summary, you could think of me as an ardent explorer of possibilities who delivers new sounds with catchy melodies, powerful voices, and colorful performances to offer, beyond a show, a whole experience.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
If there’s a will, there’s a way. I have learned that despite the harsh adversity, when I cool down and focus more on my strengths and what can be done, I often find alternatives that turn out better than the original way. Necessity unlocks our creativity and negativity blocks it, so for me it is crucial to avoid toxicity and strive for optimism.

If you made it to this point, muchas gracias!
