Conversations with David Schoffman

Today we’d like to introduce you to David Schoffman.

David Schoffman

Hi David, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
From the throat of apathy to the deafening whispers of obsession, my “story” is notable only by its lack of climax. I’m a flawed product of the comic agonies of 1970s art school rituals. How I arrived at where I am assumes a destination – a conceit I never bothered to entertain. I make things, and I make things up; that’s the job description, and it’s an easy gig if you can stand the hours.

There’s no sense in romanticizing the artist’s vocation. You spend most of your time alone and indoors trying to give form to an idea.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Has anyone ever had a “smooth road?” The crucibles were of standard fare, neither defeating nor fortifying. Have I suffered the misfortune of having to earn a living? Yes, but if that is the extent of my miseries, my life is charmed.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
The 100-panel polyptych “The Body Is His Book” took me fifteen years to complete. It was punishing. I get night sweats thinking about all the time I spent bent over my easel with my overpriced Kolinsky sable brushes, compulsively painting dot after dab after dot. If I’m known at all, I’m known for my stubborn, irrational patience.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
One of the wages of working as a visual artist is that one can thrive in isolation. If anyone out there feels that irrepressible itch to offer succor to an eccentric, feel free to reach out. I’m currently on the cusp of sending my middle son off to university, so if you want to purchase an artifact of alleged genius, please get in touch.
