Today we’d like to introduce you to Chang Min Ock.
Hi Chang, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My name is Chang Min Ock, DVM, CCRT, and I previously worked as a veterinarian in Korea.
After attending a veterinary internal medicine conference in the United States, I was deeply inspired by the dedication of veterinarians who devoted their lives to continuous learning. That experience motivated me to move to the U.S., where I could pursue lifelong education and dedicate my career to healing sick dogs and cats.
Although I was in the process of pursuing a PhD, I chose not to complete the program so that I could relocate to the United States and follow this new path.
While working as a veterinarian in the U.S., I witnessed many pets suffer because they were unable to receive timely treatment due to the high cost of orthopedic care and specialty services. Wanting to help as many animals as possible, I began studying advanced surgical techniques, including orthopedic surgery. After more than ten years of surgical experience, I opened my own hospital to help dogs regain comfort, mobility, and an improved quality of life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey was not smooth. Learning advanced surgery and internal medicine—such as orthopedic procedures and advanced medical and surgical techniques—through books alone had clear limitations, and I did not have a mentor to learn from easily. To build true expertise, I traveled across the U.S. four to five times each year for continuing education, often repeating the same courses three or four times. This required a significant investment of time and money, as well as careful scheduling.
While working full-time as a veterinarian, I spent years traveling to learn because I believed that only through deeper knowledge could I properly help more suffering animals. Looking back, it would not be easy to do it again, but at that time, I was driven by the belief that learning more meant saving more lives.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a general practice veterinarian and the founder of my own animal hospital ( Brighter Veterinary Center at Northridge,CA) While I have a strong focus and long experience in orthopedic care, my hospital provides comprehensive services including ultrasound, endoscope, internal medicine, surgery, dental care, and emergency treatment.
I am known for trying not to give up on patients simply because treatment is difficult or costly. Many animals suffer because their owners feel overwhelmed by expenses or complicated medical decisions. Instead of walking away, I try to offer the best possible care within each family’s situation, so animals can receive timely and meaningful treatment.
What I am most proud of is being able to help animals who might otherwise be left untreated. Whether it is medical management, surgery, dental care, or emergency support, my goal is always the same: to reduce suffering and give every patient a real chance to heal.
What sets me apart is my mindset. I am not a board-certified orthopedic surgeon—I am a general practitioner who has spent many years studying and practicing advanced techniques so I can do more for my patients. I believe medicine is not about titles, but about responsibility, effort, and never giving up on animals who need help.
