Conversations with Amy Goldberg

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Goldberg

Hi Amy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was a curious kid turned adult. Always looking around to see what was going on, what people were doing, and how they were doing it. My eyes wide-open. No matter where I looked music was being played, art was being made, words were put on paper, film was being shot, and where tennis shoes and racquets were all lined up along a wall. We were a creative entrepreneurial family. So it didn’t surprise me that my very first endeavour, apart from helping a friend with her paper route, was starting a window display company while I was still in school. It allowed me to utilize my visual arts skills.

You see my mom, an artist, an incredibly talented artist put me to art school at a very young age. This was a wonderful beginning to my being fully open to different perspectives. It also positioned me to leverage my skills in multi-sectors to fuel my insatiable entrepreneurial spirit.

My interests were held in two areas; film & television, and fitness & wellbeing. Eventually these two kinda morphed into me being a creative entrepreneur, strategist, and producer. My interest in the entertainment industry was, I believe, wholly in my DNA. You see I came from a family of highly successful filmmakers. Trailblazers in fact. And I learned. A lot. I think I even absorbed the learning in my sleep. It was something we did. My interest in health, fitness, and overall wellbeing most likely came from my dad’s side of the family where his brother was a groundbreaking cardiologist and head of medicine for a notable hospital.

Trust me, it wasn’t all rainbows and lemon drops. It was tough navigating multi-sectors. I questioned what the hell I was doing, and thinking; “Come on, pick one, just pick one thing to do.” Later, much later, I realized that that was exactly what I was supposed to be doing, as it served me so well down the road. It actually enhanced the work I was doing.

So, rather than fight it, I went for it. I failed, fell flat on my face, got up, dusted myself off, succeeded, created, enjoyed wonderful success, and I’ve worked and collaborated with fantastic people. And I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned with others.

If you get to a point in your life where you’re listening to others that haven’t done much themselves, and yet they’re telling you to stop, or say what you’re doing seems like a waste of time, you learn very quickly to keep going – because most people stop way too soon before something actually happens. My older brother used to say, which I love; “Hang in until luck squeezes in.” And that’s what I do!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Early on the doubt comes flooding in where I started to question what I was doing. In doing that my confidence would sometimes wane. Making everything more difficult. It was as if I was self-imposing an impenetrable wall. It was then that I started to change my way of thinking. I ignored the chatter in my brain telling me things that weren’t helpful. Once the noise quelled, I got to work. I wasn’t afraid to fail as long as I was trying. I looked at any struggle as an opportunity to learn and grow. I know, I know, you hear that all the time, and yet it’s true – you need to decide that you’re going to make things happen despite the pitfalls and struggles that arise – because they do, they always do.

Don’t get me wrong – my struggles were real. Trying to get projects off the ground, raising money, pulling teams together, getting contracts, whatever I was trying to make happen took a lot of convincing until it didn’t. Until I gained the trust, respect, and confidence in others. It took time to build lasting relationships. And it’s always been worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m the founder + CEO of Push Back Productions, a company created to create, with the understanding that sometimes you need to push back to push forward. I combined my skills and experiences as a producer, writer, entrepreneur, strategist, and yes, my influence as a health, fitness, and wellness trail-blazer to enrich and enhance all aspects of the creative work that we, the team, produce.

Apart from film, television, start-ups, new initiatives, multi-sector work, we’ve even taken the plunge into creating and producing podcasts, because, ha, who doesn’t have a podcast these days. Including us! I’m really proud of the work we’ve been able to do. It’s not easy getting things off the ground – hence the reason we always have a fews things at various stages of development, as we never know which on is going to break through first. It certainly makes things interesting.

What sets us apart from others is the diversity in the experiences that we’ve had. Personally, I feel very fortunate to have been able to transfer all that I’ve experienced, even my 2 1/2 year world travel so that I could innovate as creatively as I have. It wouldn’t have happened hadn’t I explored so many possibilities and opportunities in my life so far. And probably the reason why I have so much energy. I’m excited about things. I’m a curious person. I love creating. And creating can mean so many different things. I like that!

I’m very aware that I need to consciously motivate myself, as being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. It can be very lonely. You learn very early on that everything changes, and often. There are so many moving parts. It’s unpredictable, and learning to remain level-headed certainly helps.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Showing up. Showing up for yourself and others is the key to making things happen. I thrive on collaborations. Sharing ideas, gathering new resources, learning, exploring, and experiencing. I work with people who are self-led and have a healthy social awareness and a need to want to create.
