Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Gonzales Duong
Hi Amber, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I grew up watching my mom bake cakes for all of our family parties. We have a pretty big family, and we’re all so close, so there were lots of cakes. I fell in love with both cooking and baking. I went to Cal High specifically for their Culinary Arts Program, and I ended up getting my Bachelors of Science in Culinary Arts. I love creating desserts and especially seeing kids faces when they get to see their dream cake for their birthday. I’m now a part of the Icing smiles community, where I donate cakes to kids dealing with illnesses so they have a chance to get their dream cake. I absolutely love it.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road. I have run into quite a bit of health issues, which makes me have to put baking on hold while I recover. Thankfully I have the best supporters, and they show up for me when I’m back. They’ve sold out every single pop up I’ve had, and will even ask if there are extras.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make breads, cakes, cheesecakes, and other sweets. I would say I have become known for my brownies especially. Even those who don’t normally like brownies have told me they absolutely love mine. I use quality ingredients but I bake with love. If I’m not in a good mood, my baked items don’t come out right, plain and simple. I’m a mom of two extremely active boys, and that is what I am most proud of. They love being in the kitchen with me, but they love to eat what we’ve made even more.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer at a very young age, but instead of bringing me down, it made me fight harder. When I discovered the Icing Smiles Organization, it felt like it was the perfect match for me. I am able to donate cakes to kids who may have not had the chance to ever receive one due to their health conditions. I love that my baked goods play a role in family gatherings, important events, and lasting memories.
