Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexia Rosa
Alexia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up with a very unique musical background. I started playing the fiddle when I was 8 years old. Then I became obsessed with music and became self taught on the double bass, cello, viola, mandolin, ukulele, tenor banjo, and flute. Throughout my childhood I played in various folk music groups where I would perform across New England. I even competed in several Celtic fiddle championships and won several medals for my performances. After so many years of performing I began to compose my own music, writing musicals and instrumental fiddle pieces. After one of my compositions got played at one of my high school concerts, I got commissioned to compose a piece for the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra. It was a huge opportunity that really pushed me to pursue composition.
As a child I also had a wild imagination. I came up with stories and fantasy worlds for my brother and I to play in. As I grew up, I began writing my own stories. I wrote books and short stories. Then in college I started writing screenplays. I fell in love with the idea of writing the music to my own screenplays. It almost felt perfect as I already heard the music of the world I was building in my stories. It became my goal to get to the point in my life that I could write the music to my own screenplays.
I went to Berklee College of Music and graduated with two degrees in Film Scoring and in Composition with a minor in Creative Writing. Now I am currently in Los Angeles, pursing my passion, writing music and building worlds with my imagination.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, of course not! I went to college for music and that already was a huge struggle. So many people told me that I was fool for pursing music. And they were right. It is a very difficult industry to get into. A lot of doors were shoved and are still being shoved in my face, but even on the most heart breaking days, the worst of the worst kind of days, I knew that I could not give up. I knew that I had to keep going because I knew that I was meant for this. Film is my passion and I knew that I needed to be a part of this industry. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else. So I allow myself to have these hard days, but I continue to fight for what I want. I continue writing and I continue nudging my way into the industry because I know it is my only path. I know that this is what I am meant to do with my life.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I really love cinematic music. The type of music that is full of passion and empowerment. I have always been inspired by their force of nature to write stories and compose music that instills a drive in people to keep going. A feeling that brings hope and inspires people to follow their own paths.
I am a Spanish American woman who has had the opportunity to live in both America and Europe. I have traveled and seen many places and with that I have faced many things. These experiences have only brought a unique sound to my music. A sound that is completely different and individual to my personality and to my own experiences in life.
I am most proud of who I am due to my childhood and what I have overcome. With these memories, I have seen a side of humanity that has connected me with deep emotions, ones that have helped me profoundly to create music that impacts a person on every single level of who they are. These experiences have given me the imagination to create stories that are different from those around me as my own story is unique.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Experiences truly helps me do my best work, whether its a book I read impacted me, a film, or even a museum exhibit. There are many resources on Youtube and in any of the books I have read or movies I have seen that has inspired me in my own work. However, I definitely would advise people to get out of their shell and live a little. Online platforms are a great way to learn, but nothing will be as inspiring and life changing as the experiences you face and live through.
