Today we’d like to introduce you to Akira Tashi.
Hi Akira, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began my journey into storytelling at the age of 10, using writing as a means to cope with a traumatic experience. Recognizing the therapeutic power of expression, my grandmother enrolled me in acting classes to help reclaim my voice. This decision not only facilitated my healing but also sparked a passion for creating narratives.
During acting classes, I discovered my knack for writing plays. I organized performances with my peers, both in class and within my neighborhood, where we staged short skits for parents. This early exploration ignited a love for storytelling that would shape my future endeavors.
As I transitioned into my teenage years, I secured multiple commercial roles and eventually landed speaking parts in short films such as ‘Where the Water Runs,’ ‘Stray,’ and ‘The Debt Collector.’ In 2017, I enrolled in The Los Angeles Film School, a pivotal moment that redirected my trajectory. Initially drawn towards acting, I soon found my way into a directing program and rediscovered my true passion – screenwriting.
Graduating in 2021, I gained invaluable experience as a Script Supervisor on the final season of ’13 Reasons Why,’ establishing rapport with Netflix. This connection led to subsequent roles on projects like ‘Sunrise Ruby,’ an HBO feature titled ‘F.L.Y.,’ and a commercial with Derm 7.
Throughout my journey, I’ve written and sold several short films. Currently, I’m immersed in the creation of a documentary titled ‘Minding My Business,’ spotlighting five female entrepreneurs who built successful ventures without male involvement or financial backing.
In addition to these achievements, I’m actively involved in pitching multiple short films and series concepts to major platforms such as Netflix and HBO. My dedication to storytelling and the diverse projects I’ve been a part of underscore my commitment to bringing meaningful narratives to life.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Navigating my path in the entertainment industry has been neither entirely smooth nor overly challenging; rather, it has been a journey of self-discovery. One significant aspect has been the importance of setting boundaries and recognizing my worth as a woman in this dynamic field. It’s crucial to assert myself as a strong and valuable contributor to the industry.
One challenge I faced was learning to use my voice effectively. In an industry where traditionally, it may feel like a man’s playground, I’ve embraced the opportunity to challenge these norms. This journey has taught me the importance of not only asserting my ideas but also being discerning about the projects I choose to undertake. I’ve learned to prioritize projects that align with my moral values and contribute positively to my professional and financial growth.
The entertainment industry can be demanding, but it has also shown me the resilience and determination of women who are actively setting up shop and making their mark. I’ve come to realize that women are not just players in this field; we are here to play, compete, and reshape the narrative. It’s about standing firm in my convictions, seizing opportunities, and contributing to the evolving landscape of the industry. The challenges have been instrumental in shaping my journey, reinforcing my commitment to carving out a space for myself and other women in the industry.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a script supervisor by day and a writer 24-7. My primary focus and passion lie in writing, and it is what I am known for in the industry. Writing is not just a job for me; it’s a calling that I pursue with unwavering dedication.
In addition to my role as a writer, I specialize in script supervising. This dual expertise allows me to navigate both the creative and logistical aspects of the filmmaking process. Script supervising serves as a lucrative side hustle that not only pays the bills but also provides the financial support necessary to front my scripts and pursue my passion projects.
What sets me apart is my ability to seamlessly blend these two roles, bringing a unique perspective to each. As a script supervisor, I ensure the continuity and coherence of the film’s narrative, while my deep-rooted passion for writing fuels my creativity and commitment to producing impactful and compelling stories.
I am recognized for my versatility, balancing the demands of a script supervisor while never losing sight of my identity as a dedicated and ambitious writer. Whether meticulously overseeing the details of a film set or pouring my creativity into a script, I am committed to making a mark in both roles and contributing meaningfully to the world of storytelling.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is family – my siblings, my niece, and nephew. They are the anchor of my existence, the driving force behind my growth, thriving, and continued success. I find my purpose and inspiration in the shared journey with my family. They are not just a part of my life; they are the reason for it, guiding me towards green pastures and giving meaning to my endeavors.
Equally important to me are my friends, who have become my chosen family. They have shown me the true essence of what family means, extending their support and camaraderie. Their presence in my life is a testament to the depth of connections that can exist beyond blood relations.
My career is another vital aspect of my life, providing me with purpose and allowing me to connect with people globally. It serves as a platform for me to be a source of escape for others, fostering shared experiences and moments of connection. I am driven by the desire to create content that brings people together, encouraging group screenings and shared moments around the television.
Financial stability derived from my career is not just for personal gain; it’s a means to share abundance with my family, friends, and those less fortunate. I am motivated to be of service, using my success to make a positive impact on the lives of others. My ultimate goal is to be a source of inspiration, bringing people together and providing a reason for collective enjoyment.
In the face of obstacles, these pillars – family, friends, and career – are my reasons for resilience. They fuel my determination to push forward, overcome challenges, and continue making a meaningful contribution to the world. I am committed to creating a legacy of connection, shared joy, and service to others.
