Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Mykitta.
Kim, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I moved to LA almost ten years ago to pursue fashion. After working countless retail jobs, I eventually landed my first corporate position at a major fashion brand as a copywriter. At the time, I didn’t even know what copywriting was, but what I did know was that I had a knack for writing and a passion for the industry that would lead me to success. Creative writing became my personal outlet, which is what led me to take the corporate skills I had acquired and create my own digital brand, Sartorially OC. Together with my husband Alan as my photographer and videographer, I’ve partnered with a variety of fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands to create content and bring their stories to life. Today, I am a Content Marketing Manager for a denim brand while simultaneously working to grow Sartorially OC to its fullest potential.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Although my journey has been fairly smooth, I still find myself doubting the path I’ve chosen to take. The blogging industry is a competitive place to be right now with so much saturation. It’s hard not to compare yourself to others who may have started out at the same time as you and have seen quicker growth or have built more brand relationships. However, you just have to keep telling yourself ‘you’re not them.’
Everyone has a unique journey, and it’s important to remember that and stay focused on what YOU’RE doing, not everyone else. If you can set your OWN goals and targets to achieve and can work your way towards those, that’s the key to success in my eyes.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Sartorially OC story. Tell us more about it.
Currently, I work as a full-time Content Marketing Manager for a small denim brand. I not only do all the copywriting but help to create a cohesive marketing strategy across all of our digital channels. I work with bloggers and content creators on a regular basis, which I think has been beneficial to my blogging career because it helps me see both sides of the partnership—what the brands are wanting out of it and what I as an influencer and content creator can do to achieve that in the best way possible. I think that I am proud of how I balance the two, even though sometimes it’s not easy! To put it plainly, I am a hustler. I’m always working on something. If I’m not ‘creating’ in some way then I definitely go a little stir crazy.
Do you have any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general? What has worked well for you?
I think the one thing that has helped me further my growth in the blogging industry specifically is saying ‘yes’! I remember the first blogging event I attended alone—I was terrified. I couldn’t find anyone to go with me, but I RSVP’d yes nonetheless because I really wanted to go. Being there by myself ended up being a blessing because it really encouraged me to strike up conversations and introduce myself to people there I might not have otherwise. Some were even bloggers I had followed and looked up to, who have now become both mentors and friends! Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, you’d be surprised at the results.
