Today we’d like to introduce you to Vishnu Kay.
Hi Vishnu, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born with the natural aptitude to take beautiful pictures so I cashed on it, said no Photographer ever. It all started with curiosity. Back in the mid-late 2000s, DSLRs were slowly becoming popular. Me being me wanted to stand out from the rest of the crowd. So, rhetorically, I started backward. I started reading the manual. I then bought my first piece of gear which was way out of my budget for what was then, just a hobby.
Very soon, I was known as “the guy with the camera”. So, I was invited for all the events people were hosting. Not that I’m not a nice guy to hang out with (at least, I’d like to believe so) but they’d also say “Hey, bring your camera along”. Before I realized, I started noticing the pictures I took, framed on walls in people’s homes. So, I created an Instagram account, for kicks. I never turned back.
With being half decent with the camera, I’m also considered as the 2nd coolest kid in a room <self-critic mode: on>. I am generally a people person so conducting myself at events was seamless and I started enjoying all the love I get to see at weddings and such. That’s just adding fuel to the fire. So, here we are. 5 Professional years, 383 photoshoots, 188 couples and 122 weddings later.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It is never a smooth road. Not just for me, any small business owner would agree with me.
From setting up to management to networking, to scaling up, the work grows exponentially while your clock seems to be ticking faster. Managing a full-time job, having a personal life and running a small business alongside needs its own designation. It’s no less than being a superhero.
We’ve been impressed with Yin & Yang Studios, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a Wedding Photography & Videography studio that is based in the San Francisco Bay Area region. We specialize in South Asian / Indian weddings.
We emphasize on creating an experience for the couples we work with and view their celebration as not just an event. I guess everyone is exceptional at what they do but in the modest of ways, I think we kick ass at documenting and storytelling someone’s special day as it happened.
We also strongly believe in capturing a moment in its purest essence, so you’ll never hear us saying, ok let’s try this one more time. It feels like I’m pitching my services to all the prospective clients but when someone looks at our galleries of work, we pay attention to the smallest detail.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
While the pandemic has changed the paradigm of the whole wedding industry, one thing that has merged stronger and better is people’s outlook.
The biggest change I have seen over the years is the impact of social media. Remember how the wedding photos and videos were mere keepsakes, long gone are those days. Also, couples now know exactly what they are looking for in the wedding photos. And that is good, it makes my job easy.
