Today we’d like to introduce you to Tye Banks.
Hi Tye , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I got my start in the film industry back in 2008, originally jumping into commercials to help get my hip-hop music more exposure. I spent years acting in various projects—including several NASCAR commercials as part of a pit crew—which eventually provided the $14,000 in residuals I used to fund my first feature. Before filming, I made sure to head back to school for screenwriting classes so I could personally write the script for my debut, Hit a Lick. That project eventually came to life starring J. Alphonse Nicholson (P-Valley) along with Luray Cooper and Trey Cheney both from The HBO Series The Wire, and I’ve been hooked on directing ever since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, especially since the early success leveled off and forced me to pivot from acting to the business side of production. I’ve essentially become a one-man band—handling directing, cinematography, and sound—mainly because learning these skills myself was the only way to ensure a solid ROI on my projects. While investing in myself this way turned me into a true producer and filmmaker, it required a major sacrifice by pushing my acting career to the back burner. Now, my focus is on juggling the finances and logistics to make sure every move I make is a strategic win.
As you know, we’re big fans of Tye Banks Films. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
While I take pride in the technical side of filmmaking, I am a “story first” creator who believes the narrative is the heartbeat of every project. My goal is to craft immersive films that offer viewers a true sense of escape, allowing them to lose themselves in the drama and excitement of the world I’ve built. For me, success isn’t just about the ROI; it’s about making sure the audience is fully entertained from the first frame to the last.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I definitely believe luck plays a part, but it only really counts if you’re prepared to jump on it when it shows up. I’ve learned to trust my gut on when to pivot to the next thing, but my main rule is simple: finish what I start. At the end of the day, I’m a “story first” filmmaker who just wants to give people a solid escape. For me, it’s all about making sure the audience stays entertained and actually seeing every vision through to the end.
